Sullivan County DA's office orders investigation of cancelled GOP event

The Sullivan County District Attorney's Office is now investigating a cancelled GOP presidential forum in Kingsport.

DA Barry Staubus says the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the matter at his request.

Back in October, the political action group in charge of organizing the forum at Meadowview Convention center in Kingsport cancelled the event.

Conservatives on the move co-founder Fabian Story told?11 Connects?at the time that cooperation issues were to blame.

Local Tea Party activist Kay White--who was helping organize the event--says she sold roughly 380 tickets along with sponsorships?to the forum.?

White estimates those sales along with online sales made by Story totaled between $35,000 and $38,000.

"...I have a copy of every check with a copy of the deposit slip that those checks made up...people just need to know that I kept those records and that has been very helpful to the TBI,"?said White.

Story says the money was used for event and operating expenses.?

Staubus declined to comment further on the reason for the investigation.

Paul campaign pulls in cash from military donors (AP)

GALVESTON, Texas ? An Army reservist who spoke up for Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul while in uniform ? and landed in trouble for it ? is just one of the soldiers getting behind the Texas congressman's campaign.

Plenty of other troops simply send Paul some campaign cash.

Paul arrived Friday in New Hampshire riding the momentum of a top-three finish in Iowa, a fundraising haul of $13 million in the last quarter and bragging rights of having more donors who list military affiliations than his Republican rivals combined.

Not among those contributors: Cpl. Jesse Thorsen, who gushed that it was "like meeting a rock star" when he joined Paul on stage wearing his camouflaged fatigues in Iowa this week. That ran afoul of Defense Department rules involving partisan political events, though the military doesn't prohibit soldiers from giving money to candidates.

Paul is the only Republican who says he'll bring home nearly all U.S. forces if elected, and that could be helping him draw in dollars.

Paul received at least $95,567 from military donors between January and September of last year, the most recent data available, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. That's nearly seven times what Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, who edged out Paul in Iowa, collected from military donors combined.

Retired Army Sgt. Thomas Rutherford, whose campaign contribution of $201 hit the threshold for public disclosure under federal election law, believes soldiers started taking a closer look at Paul's opposition to U.S. intervention after experiencing it firsthand.

"He has the firmest grasp on foreign policy of all of them," said Rutherford, 36. "I used to think we're the biggest, best country in the world and we have to go over there and show them how to do it. In the military, I came to the conclusion that the best way how to do it wasn't to use the Army."

Experts on political activity in the military say the money doesn't necessarily mean Paul, 76, is the preferred Republican candidate among U.S. service members. But no other contender in race has had a soldier make such a splash on their behalf as Thorsen, who's gone from be a 28-year-old reservist off active duty to a political celebrity overnight.

Thorsen became Paul's best-known supporter in uniform after appearing on the podium at the campaign's Iowa headquarters Tuesday night.

"We don't need to be picking fights overseas and I think everybody knows that, too," he said to loud applause.

Thorsen later told The Associated Press that he believes many troops support Paul.

"A lot more than you would think, absolutely," he said. "And, I think one thing that would help is more people need to stop voting for what they think is best for their party and start voting for what they think is best for their country."

Military rules prohibit soldiers from expressing opinions about candidates while in uniform. Thorsen has stopped giving interviews to news media.

A spokeswoman for the Army Reserve, Maj. Angel Wallace, said Friday that Thorsen's company commander plans to meet with him in coming days to discuss his appearance with Paul while in uniform and to decide whether disciplinary action is required.

Paul's Iowa campaign chairman, Drew Ivers, said Paul invited Thorsen to speak after a live interview Thorsen had with CNN was cut off for technical difficulties. He said the campaign thought Thorsen would know the rules about political activity in uniform and that it didn't know he could get in trouble.

"It was not planned, scheduled, rehearsed or scripted," Ivers said of Thorsen's appearance at the rally. "I think his spontaneous reaction for 30 seconds on stage is reflective of the general military support for Ron Paul. We've established that through a number of other areas."

Soldiers throwing money behind Paul isn't new. The former Air Force surgeon is one of two veterans in this year's GOP field, along with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also served in the Air Force. Paul raised more money from military donors in his 2008 presidential run than his rivals in that campaign.

Between January and September, Romney raised $13,300 and Santorum $750 among donors who listed a military affiliation as their employer. Newt Gingrich had $4,900. Paul also outpaced military donations made to President Barack Obama, who had $72,616.

The donations are a mix of those on active duty and veterans, though the exact mix is unclear. Rutherford, for instance, was medically discharged from the Army in 2002, but his donation doesn't indicate that he's no longer on active duty.

The outsize number of military donors is a badge of honor for the Paul campaign, which has been derisively mocked as the choice of pot smokers, 9/11 conspiracy theorists and idealistic young voters whose wild enthusiasm at campaign stops doesn't always translate to Election Day turnout.

Army Maj. Heidi Urben, who was a task force intelligence officer in Afghanistan, studied political activism among soldiers for her dissertation at Georgetown University. She surveyed more than 4,000 soldiers in 2009 by email, asking questions such as whether they had ever donated money to a political candidate or party.

The survey wasn't specific to actual candidates, but about 20 percent told Urben they had made campaign contributions at some point in their lives. More than 80 percent of respondents said they voted in the 2008 presidential election.

Soldiers were more likely to donate the higher their rank, but Urben, who teaches at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, said she found that other than voting, political activism in Army ranks is fairly muted.

"Our intrepid corporal is a bit of an outlier, but an instructive outlier nonetheless (a great teaching moment for my cadets here too on what's permissible and what's not)," Urben wrote in an email to the AP.

As Obama tweaks policy on illegal immigrants, will Latino voters swoon?

Obama moves to make it easier for some illegal immigrants to obtain legal status, dismantling hurdles set by congressional Republicans. The step is likely to shore up his support among Latino voters, but it could also polarize the country.

The Obama White House acted Friday to ease the transition from illegal immigrant to legal US resident, another assertion of executive power that sidesteps Congress and a move that some see as calculated to boost the president's standing among Latinos in an election year.?

Beneficiaries of the administration's move are families in which some members are US citizens and some aren't. The aim is to shorten the duration of separation for such families, rather than require the illegal residents to return to their home countries for as many as 10 years before applying for legal US residency, as a 1996 law ? approved by a Republican-led Congress ? mandates.

The proposed change will undergo a review but doesn't require congressional approval. Under the so-called "hardship waiver,"?illegal immigrants who are married or otherwise related to US citizens would be able to pick up the waiver before leaving the United States and then be allowed to return almost immediately after picking up visas in their home countries.?

Critics decry it as a "backdoor amnesty" that eases the path to citizenship for lawbreakers.

In another sign that the Obama administration is working to lower the bar to citizenship, one-quarter of all US immigration officers report they've been pressured by supervisors to overlook problems on citizenship applications,?according to?a draft report released Friday by the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General.?That report drew a rebuke from Sen. Charles Grassley (R) of Iowa, who accused Alejandro Mayorkas, chief of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, of downplaying national security concerns.

By making it easier for undocumented immigrants from mixed citizenship families to achieve legal status, the administration may tamp down ire within the Hispanic community over record numbers of deportations during the Obama presidency. It also offers a counterpoint to Republican presidential candidates, most of whom endorse policies against illegal immigration that many Latinos see as harsh and even cruel.

Obama's strategy is designed both to normalize relations with an important but restive Hispanic voting bloc and to stoke a political fight with Republicans. The strategy aims to contrast Obama's approach to illegal immigrants against hardline Republican rhetoric about the need to deport each and every one.

Some conservative commentators acknowledge Obama's is a powerful strategy, especially as the GOP presidential candidates, in their many debates, just keep reciting the ills of illegal immigration.

?Immigration has loomed larger as an issue in the Republican presidential debates than it does in the minds of most voters,? writes Daniel Griswold in the conservative publication National Review Online. ?So far, the biggest loser in the competition is the Republican Party. The party is losing out because the rhetoric brings us no closer to actually solving the problem, while driving away voters crucial to the party's long-term success.?

NBA All-Star Game 2012 tickets scarce, costly

If you want to go to the NBA All-Star Game 2012 on Feb. 26 at Amway Center in Orlando, you'll need to get lucky and then still dig deep into your pocket.

Tickets are as scarce as they are costly, with the league pricing lower-bowl seats at $750 a ticket and upper-bowl seats at $500.

Magic season-ticket holders must log into an account and complete a random drawing application for the chance to buy tickets to the All-Star Game and/or ancillary events, such as the three-point shoot-out and slam-dunk contest.

Magic CEO Alex Martins said after a news conference staged by the NBA on Wednesday at Amway Center that 3,000 tickets in the lottery will be available to Magic season-ticket holders

Asked if the general public could attend the game, Martins said, "There's a very slim chance if you're not a season-ticket holder," adding that the NBA controls the ticket inventory and pricing.

Martins encouraged fans to attend the events surrounding the All-Star Weekend if they want to be part of the experience. He said there will be about 5,000 tickets available for the rookie vs. sophomore game on Friday night, for example ($50 for lower-bowl seating, $35 for upper bowl.)

The league also makes available a certain amount of tickets that season-ticket holders with other teams have the chance to purchase.

The NBA, as it has done for years, caters to its corporate and television sponsors as well as players' families and various VIPs with its ticket allotments.

Fans who don't own season tickets can purchase tickets on independent websites such as centerboxoffice.org. And they aren't cheap. The Sentinel found that tickets on that site ranged from $582 to $883, depending on location in the arena.

Voting for players to represent the Eastern and Western Conferences also began Wednesday. Fans can choose their favorite players through various means: on-line, texting and filling out paper ballots at arenas.

Martins said the league expects 50,000 visitors to come to Orlando for the event, filling about 30,000 hotel rooms in the area. He estimated the economic effect to be about $100 million.

The city was awarded the All-Star Game in May of 2010, one of the perks after Orlando approved funding of the $480-million arena in 2007.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said all-star weekend is "one of the reasons we built this facility."

Orlando only hosted the All-Star Game once before, in 1992, a game made memorable because Magic Johnson came out of retirement after contracting the AIDS virus. Johnson was named the game's MVP.

LeBron carries load as Heat scorches Pacers (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? LeBron James carried the extra load without Dwyane Wade as the Miami Heat recovered from their first loss of the season to crush the Indiana Pacers 118-83 on Wednesday.

James just missed a triple-double, posting 33 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds to ensure the Heat (6-1) kept their offense running smoothly while Wade sat out with a nagging foot injury.

"We were able to get a lot of different contributions (from James)," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters.

"He had 13 assists, but a lot of defensive plays and the rebounds in traffic really got us out in the open court in the first half."

Having lost to the Atlanta Hawks two days earlier to end their undefeated start, Miami quickly returned to business as usual.

They buried Indiana with a 33-12 second quarter run sparked by James Jones, who caught fire with a trio of three-pointers in quick succession and finished with 14 points after starting in place of Wade.

Chris Bosh added 22 for the Heat, who continued to pad out their lead and were never threatened by the visitors.

"We just really wanted to focus and play the same game we've been playing, and not slow down because (Wade's) out," Bosh said.

"We wanted to do a better job defensively. It's about time for us to start sticking more to our principles and holding each other accountable."

The Pacers moved within 77-65 late in the third but Miami closed the quarter on an 11-1 run and outscored the visitors 30-17 in the fourth for the final margin.

Roy Hibbert led the way with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers (4-2) who managed just 34 percent shooting as they fell to their second loss in three games.

Danny Granger made just 2-of-13 shots to continue his shooting slump. Indiana's leading scorer last season with more than 20 points per game, Granger entered the night shooting 36 percent from the field this season.

Tabulaw Seeks to Simplify Legal Research and Writing ? Robert ...

A new website called Tabulaw hopes to simplify the task of legal research and writing. As of this writing, the site is still in a private beta, which means you?ll have to fill out a request to obtain an invitation to try it out.

The site?s premise is that legal research tools are expensive, fragmented and redundant. It seeks to remedy this by combining key tools in a single location and making them all play nice together.

A Quote Bundle in Tabulaw

From within the Tabulaw site, you can search for a court opinion. (It uses Google Scholar to find cases.) Once you find a case, as you read through it, you can highlight passages. The text you highlight is automatically saved, complete with its citation. The passages are saved in Quote Bundles to which you can assign names and descriptions.

Once you have done your research and you are ready to start writing, you can do that from within Tabulaw also. You can create and edit a new document in Tabulaw, upload one from your computer, or import one from Google Docs. It appears that Tabulaw uses Google Docs as its document-editing base.

As you write, your quotes are displayed in a panel to the right of the document. Simply click any quote to insert it in your document, complete with its full citation (including page citation). You can also click a button to return to the case and see the quote in context. Any documents you create in Tabulaw can be downloaded to Microsoft Word.

Tabulaw has fairly rudimentary collaboration features at this point. You can share your Quote Bundles with other Tabulaw users or send them by email. You cannot share documents directly from within Tabulaw, as far as I could see.

There are shortcomings to Tabulaw. For one, there is no way to search statutes, which limits its usefulness for some. For another, it has no real word-processing features other than the ability to create and write documents. For any formatting and final touches, you would have to export the document.

That said, the ability to easily save, organize and use quotes from court cases could be a time saver. I could see this being a useful intermediary tool when writing a quick memorandum on a short deadline. Get it started on your computer, upload it to Tabulaw and incorporate the research, then download it and give it the finishing touches.
