Acting Green vs. Buying Green

The following is a guest post from Jaclyn at eLocal.com.

As we work to enhance the health of our environment, there are two options to consider: do you act green or buy green in your home?

For example, you can shorten the length of your shower or use fewer lights ? or you can just update your appliance to low-flow, energy efficient appliances. By updating the products in your home, you do not have to change your lifestyle.

This infographic compares the two choices.

On the Same Page

I?ve tried to complete daf yomi, twice. The first time was 15 years ago, after my father and I attended the 10thsiyum hashas, at Madison Square Garden. His friend had two extra tickets and my older brother passed on the opportunity. As with many Orthodox Jewish events, there was separate seating for men and women, and I somehow ended up with the best seat in the house, accompanied on the Garden floor by a friendly female security guard as my father looked on from a sea of black hats and beards. When we got home, we decided that if everyone else there could do it, we could, too. Unfortunately, a week later we realized that we?d only been reading one side of the page, or amud, instead of both sides of the page that make up the full daf, and at our pace it would take 15 years to complete. (Such a thing, amud yomi, does exist, to which I say: Those people have a lot of patience.)

Ex Boyfriend Just Wants To Be Friends - What Do I Do Now?

Ex Boyfriend Just Wants To Be Friends - What Do I Do Now?

"We can always be friends," he might tell you, with a half-guilty smile. A lot of guys say this line to their ex girlfriends, and in most cases, it's an attempt to make a bad situation better. It's also an attempt to salvage what's left of a relationship and to keep both parties amiable to each other. It may seem awkward, but to a lot of people, being friends is the next logical step after a broken relation. So if you recently broke up with your boyfriend and he wants to be "just friends for awhile," why shouldn't you take him up on his offer? After all, you're both adults, so why don't you give a try?

Well, there are a few reasons why this isn't always a good idea. First of all, there's a good chance that you are still in love with him, and because you're still in love, becoming friends an ex boyfriend is usually a sign that you're still hoping that the relationship will somehow fix itself. Even if you can somehow convince yourself that your new relationship is platonic, your feelings might not agree. The truth is that break ups are complicated things, and trying to be friends is a misguided attempt at making a complicated issue appear simpler. In many cases, both parties only end up causing each other more emotional pain, thus straining their newfound friendship.

On the surface, becoming friends with one's ex seems like the smartest and most dignified solution to a bad break up. After all, you'll still be able to see each other. You can still talk, and have decent conversations with him. And best of all, he and you will be able to move past the conflict that used to plague your relationship.

Moreover, there's a certain degree of freedom in being just friends with someone. For one thing, there are fewer obligations to worry about, and of course, you can start dating other people again, if that's what you want. Unfortunately, all these things are just wishful thinking. In reality, being just friends with your former boyfriend is a lot more complicated than you think.

Consider, for example, those problems that you and your ex boyfriend used to have when you were still dating. Those problems will inevitably surface in your new platonic relationship. It can happen at any time, and in any situation. In some cases, both of you may be even be tempted to having sex again - a platonic type of sex with no strings attached (though, of course, there always are). Although there are all kinds of things that you can tell yourself to make the whole situation seem pleasant, the truth is that having sex with one's ex ultimately leads to unwelcome emotions. And regardless of how much you tell yourself that it was a rational decision, you're still you're going to feel horrible if he fails to call you back in the following days - which isn't wrong since both of you are "just friends" now.

Aside from sex, dating is also another problem. In any case, even if you can keep your relationship with your former boyfriend strictly platonic, what do you think is going to happen once he finds a new girl to date? Will you still be "friends" then? Will you able to see him as often as you used to? And, most important of all, will he ask you to meet his new girlfriend?

If your ex boyfriend finds someone new, and you're still "friends" with him then there's a very good chance that you'll end up jealous, which in turn, will lead to conflict with your ex. If or when that happens then you might just end up alienating your boyfriend even more.

The same problem also applies in an opposite scenario. If you were to find a new boyfriend, how do you think your new relationship will affect your "friendship" with your old boyfriend? The truth is that when this kind of thing happens, some friction will occur, and you as well as your ex may end up arguing about your new relationship. Likewise, your new boyfriend may not like the idea that his new girl is buddies with her ex. So avoid being friends with your ex, especially if you're planning to date someone new.

Now, what if your goal is to get back your boyfriend? Wouldn't that make the situation entirely different? After all, being "friends" with your ex allows you to rebuild your relationship. It also gives you time to figure out a way to win back his love without alienating him or forcing him into a difficult position. If all goes well, you will be able get your boyfriend to love you again without much trouble. Is that really what you think? I'm afraid that the reality is a different story.

Being friends with your ex boyfriend that you still love is often riskier than simply avoiding him. In most cases, the guy knows that his ex still loves him, and may use those feelings to his advantage. If this is the case then you'll be powerless to stop him from dating someone new since, you're just friends now.

The truth is that if you want your ex-boyfriend to love you again, the last thing you'll want to do is to become his friend. If you want to win him back then you need to want him back as a boyfriend and not as a friend. Establishing a platonic relationship with your ex will hinder this process, and the longer you keep up the facade, the more difficult it will be to get him back.

So don't kid yourself. A friend is never a substitute for a boyfriend. If you want your ex boyfriend to love you again then you will need to do it using the right tactics. For starters, you need to make him miss you. You also need to help him remember what you used to have, and what it meant to be with each other. Friendship is just capitulation.

What To Do Next

If you want to make him want you again then you will need to have a plan of action to make him see you as a potential girlfriend. You will also need to out a way reignite his desire for you. Learning a thing or two about male psychology can help you accomplish these goals. You should also try to remember how you were able to get his attention in the first place.

And lastly, you should try to know if your boyfriend still wants you, look out for the signs he still loves you. There's no point in doing anything if you're not sure what's going on in his head. Once you have the information though, you'll have an easier time getting him to love you again.

My Dog Smells | Kissed By Dogs Blog

If your family pet stinks, it is in excess of possible that it needs a bath. There might be a health issue if the family pet stinks after a bath; there is a good chance that there could be a health issue. Smells could be indicative of bacterial growth. It is most likely harmless and will not induce anything in excess of the stink, but it could also bring about lesions on the skin that can be very smelly.

03/14/2011 Wilmington, DE ? Taye Port owns a rescued family pet who now suffers skin problems that lead to oozing lesions on the skin. ?It is a very difficult situation for us and I am sure that it is bad for our dog as well,? said Port. ?What we did was take him to the dog vet to get the animal checked out. They gave us medication that assisted with the odor.? Port was also one of the individuals who were there at the launch of the site ? http://www.weimaranerproblems.com/weimaraner-biting/.

In one of the boards that focused on problems with weimaraner biting, one of the people shared their worry regarding odor dogs.

Apparently, an owner who has three dogs can leave two without any bathing for more than a week and not stink. The female family pet on the other hand gets smelly readily.

It is only natural for a canine to get smelly. How quickly an animal gets stink usually depends on quite a few factors. Genetics also can come into play as some breeds are usually a lot stinkier than others. The coat will also be factor that can affect how a family pet smells. The pet dog?s activity level also can bring about smelliness in dogs.

Since dogs have no sweat glands, owners must look at the type of activity that family pet has been doing. For example, had your canine been spending plenty of time in a smelly place? Weather will also play a part since wet dogs are likely to stink.

In addition to the above, a family pet also can become very smelly when it is bacterial or fungal issues with its skin. Infections can happen for many reasons and they can cause really smelly skin lesions. Dogs might also become very smelly when they have yeast infections.

Owners can increase the frequency of baths to keep them from smelling. Owners who are taking their pets to a pro groomer also should ask to have the anal gland expressed because that can cause body odors.

It is really essential for owners to find out the reason why they have a smelly pet dog. The same thing was suggested in the weimaraner biting family pet forums. This is since you will really need to know the reason for your family pet smelling in order to find a good therapy for it.

Members speak out on Crystal Springs church controversy

A week after a black couple was asked to move their wedding out of a Crystal Springs church, members are speaking out while their pastor stays quiet

The week has been anything but Tranquil for the congregation at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.

Some members are fighting mad about the media attention surrounding the church leadership's decision to not let a black couple get married there. One woman swung a purse at 16 WAPT reporter Meg Pace before entering the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.

"There's a lot of people in the church that are suffering inner turmoil over this issue," said church member Ralph Miley.

Other church members said it was not the entire congregation's decision. Ray Henderson, an African-American churchgoer, said he isn't letting the allegations keep him from attending First Baptist Crystal Springs.

"I love these people, and they love me," said Henderson.

Some members said the pastor was put in a tough spot.

"He was trying to gain time really, to deal with racism among the few members of our church who created this situation," said Robert Mack, a member of First Baptist Crystal Springs and a retired Southern Baptist pastor.

Te'Andrea and Charles Wilson, who'd been attending First Baptist Crystal Springs, were supposed to get married last Saturday. However, just a few days before the ceremony, they said Pastor Stan Weatherford told them some members were upset because they didn't want a black couple married there.

"I was told because members of the congregation said no black has ever been married in that church and they will not be married in that church. And, I talk a lot, but I didn't talk then, my mouth was just like (opens mouth)," said Charles Wilson.

The Wilsons said they were heartbroken. The church returned their $500 deposit and moved the wedding to another church down the street.

On Sunday morning, Weatherford preached from the book of Matthew. The story was about Jesus and his disciples who were caught in a storm, and Weatherford compared it to the storm he said his church is in, in the midst of allegations of racism. At the end of the service, dozens of members crowded the church's altar in tears and prayer.

Te'Andrea Wilson said she will never return to First Baptist Crystal Springs. That makes Barbara Mack sad.

"It's a shame, because we would love to see her back in our fellowship. We would love for her to become a member of our church," said member Barbara Mack.

Several members said they'd like to see the members who didn't want the Wilson's married there to apologize to the couple and step down from any leadership positions they may have in the church.

Safely Kill Slugs and Snails with Commercial and Organic Products ...

With gardening season in full swing, gardeners are once again dealing with a new onslaught of dreaded slugs and snails. It?s a battle every gardener faces, so let?s look at some products and natural ways to rid your garden of these pests.

Your first task is to actually identify and ensure that what you are dealing with is indeed an infestation of slugs and snails. Snails of course are fairly easy to identify as they have shells that are coiled, and are usually not over 1 ? inches long. Slugs on the other hand have no shell and can measure up to one inch long. They normally look a greyish color or darker, and sometimes they look to have a pattern, but they are also known to be green and black. You?ll find a trail of mucus behind them and if you?ve got eggs as well, they?ll look clear, almost round and be encased in what looks like a jelly substance.

Believe it or not, some people handpick these little creatures with the hope that they?ve not yet laid any eggs. If you manage to rid your garden of these adult creatures and there are eggs laid, the babies will do much less damage than the adults. So if you?re up to the task, imagine yourself out in the garden at night with a pair of chopsticks and a flashlight. Once caught just drop them in a soapy container for disposal later.

Trapping snails and slugs is another option, albeit much more complicated than other options. Every evening put down a sheet of particle board and lay cabbage leaves and rinds from oranges or grapefruit. Most snails and slugs will use these to shade themselves from light and heat from the sun. Check every morning and simply put the ones you catch in your trash. Do this daily and you?ll soon have a pest free garden.

Pet food can also help you in deterring these pests. Using a pie pan made from tinfoil, cut out an opening on the rim and place upside down on the ground. Place the pet food on the ground, put the pie plate over it and use something to weigh it down. The next morning you?ll scoop up the little critters, put them in a container and then into the trash. Of course, you?ll have to make sure that skunks and raccoons are not feeding on the food. If you have this problem, resort to other methods.

Last, but not least, snails and slugs hate anything that is scratchy. From sandpaper to wood ashes and eggs shells, these can provide a great barrier from the snails and slugs getting into your garden. Some people use diatomaceous earth, but if you live in a rainy area it?s not cost effective. Sandpaper is excellent as a scratchy material and can be used in a decorative way to accent plants in your garden. Some people use sandpaper from an orbital sander and by cutting a large hole in the center, they actually wrap it around the bottom of plants.

Organic bait is a great way to rid your garden of pests, without hurting your domestic dogs and cats. Containing iron phosphate, a natural compound normally found in soil, it can kill snails and slugs in approximately six days. If they don?t eat the pellets, they simply blend into the ground and act as a fertilizer.

There are a wealth of other solutions, including commercial products and you?re local garden club will be able to provide you with information on what works well in your area.

How well does Skype keep secrets?

By Bob Sullivan

Skype helps keep more secrets than any software on Earth, but just how safe are those secrets? That question arose again in earnest this week, after a set of stories claimed new Skype technologies made it easier for law enforcement to eavesdrop on members.

With 250 million users, Skype ?owned since 2011 by Microsoft -- might be considered the world's most widely distributed communication tool. Because its software encrypts those conversations, it is certainly the world's biggest deployment of encryption tools.? That's served the service well for years: It has a reputation for helping dissidents foment revolutions, and for being a last bastion of privacy.?

Governments, of course, hate secrets, and secret-keeping technologies that might enable what they identify as criminal behavior. Skype makes it possible to have phone calls that can't be wiretapped -- making the service a battleground in this perpetual privacy vs. order fight.

Since Skype first went corporate in 2005, with its purchase by eBay, that battleground has grown even more complicated.? A scrappy start-up can ignore the Chinese government and the FBI for a while; a Wall Street company with billions in revenue cannot.

Since that time, privacy advocates like Chris Soghoian have called on Skype to clearly spell out its secret-keeping technologies and provide assurance that it's not cutting deal with government agencies, enabling secret wiretaps or other intrusions.? In his view, Skype has been coy, and only answered in generalities.

"There are a lot of people who deep in their gut mistrust Skype," said, Soghoian, a fellow at the Washington, D.C., advocacy group Open Society Foundations, which says it promotes democracy around the world.

That mistrust set the stage for a flurry of reports this week suggesting that the service is no longer fully private. A flurry of bloggers -- noting the introduction of centralized "supernodes" by Skype that might provide a central point for eavesdropping, and a Microsoft patent describing a technological method for eavesdropping -- put two and two together and speculated that Skype's communications tools were no longer fully private.

In a rare step, Skype responded with a detailed rebuttal on its website.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," wrote Mark Gillett, the firm's chief development and operations officer, speaking generally about accusations that Skype is acting "against our users' interests."? He issued a point-by- response to many charge specifically leveled against Skype, saying that nothing about Skype's "posture and policies" with regard to law enforcement had changed.?

?Supernodes,? which route Skype traffic through central servers rather than allowing point-to-point connections, merely improve the flow of information around the service, Gillett said. What's more, they connect only addressing information -- actual phone calls don't flow through those servers, so they do not provide a convenient access point for wiretaps. That denial is clear and specific.

"Skype to Skype calls do not flow through our data centers and the 'supernodes' are not involved in passing media (audio or video) between Skype clients," Gillett wrote.

Moreover, he pointed out, they were first deployed back in 2010, well before Microsoft purchased Skype. ?

There are, of course, plenty of other ways that law enforcement could theoretically crack its way into Skype calls. There could be a backdoor built into the service. Skype could create and keep a spare set of encryption keys to unlock message at government requests.? As Soghoian suggests, Skype could even authorize encryption keys that would allow the government to impersonate a user, and then perform a so-called "man in the middle attack," with a government agent secretly inserted into the middle of a phone call, able to eavesdrop.

Answering a query from NBC News,?Skype executive Chaim Haas, said in an email that the firm does not save keys for government use.

"Encryption keys ... are not revealed to users or escrowed to third parties and are discarded when the session ends," said Hass, the service's senior vice president for technology, emerging media and digital strategy. "(The) use of credential-based identities and end-to-end encryption to make 'man-in-the-middle' attacks very unlikely," he added.

Skeptics like Soghoian still aren't satisfied, however. He says the volume of the conspiracy theories from the past week shows how much people are suspicious of Skype, even if supernodes are the wrong reason to doubt the company.

"Skype is always very careful how (it) phrases things," he said.? "If they say they haven't changed their intercept policy since Microsoft purchased the company, then the question to ask is, 'What was that policy before?' If you ask them, they won't give a straight answer."

Indeed, the answer Skype gives consistently to that question is this: "When a law enforcement entity follows the appropriate procedures, we respond where legally required and technically feasible."

It's that ?technically feasible? part which bother Soghoian.

"Why don't they just come out and say how their technology works?" he said. "The company is extremely evasive and we wouldn't accept that anywhere else. ... Think about this: What other security company is there where the company won't describe how it secures user data, but people still assume it's safe?"

It's those assumptions that bother Soghoian. People say things on Skype that they wouldn't say elsewhere because they assume the conversation is completely safe from prying eyes.? If it's not, there's a real hazard.

"There's a solid body of research which shows that when people think they are safe, they will engage in riskier activities," he said. "People use Skype because they think it's secure, but Skype has done nothing to clarify what it does and doesn't offer." He's concerned that Skype is, in a sense, having it both ways -- benefitting from offering a communications tool with a reputation for being completely safe from government's prying eyes, while benefitting from relationships with governments that help its business.

Other technology companies, like Google, provide what are called "transparency reports," which give some information about the number of times they have fulfilled requests from government agencies. Twitter released its first such report earlier this month. So far, Skype has not done so.

Still, a transparency report is not likely to answer the key question: How safe are secrets on Skype? By the time that answer arrives, it will likely be too late to be relevant.? It's a bit of a Catch-22.? The day that data gleaned from a Skype-based wiretap shows up in a criminal indictment or lawsuit -- which is often how these mysterious business practices are revealed -- is the day that government agencies will no longer be that interested in eavesdropping on Skype.

"If people hear that Skype is not secure, they won't use it for those private conversations, and they will be less interesting to law enforcement," Soghoian said.?

Such was the case with once-popular encryption email service called "Hushmail." In 2007, it was revealed that Hushmail had helped the Canadian government obtain as massive number of emails while it tried to prosecute alleged illegal steroid dealers. ?Hushmail then fell out of favor, and became a less interesting place for law enforcement, Soghoian said.

"Several agencies learned their lesson from Hushmail," he said.? "They blew their cover ... that won't happen again."

ASUS breaks through 120Hz refresh rate with VG2788H gamer monitor refresh

ASUS continues to update its VG monitor series, and this time it's got something a little more impressive than an integrated IR transmitter. According to FlatpanelsHD, the VG278HE has knocked through the 120Hz barrier that most monitors come up against. The 27-incher can be configured to a buttery smooth 144Hz for 2D and 3D gaming, while inputs include HDMI, dual-link DVI and VGA. The monitor also supports NVIDIA's 3D Vision 2 -- but you'll have to buy the rest of the parts separately. We've reached out to ASUS about pricing and availability, but until we hear more, you'll just have to imagine those breezy refresh rates. Update: ASUS told us we can expect to see the display hit shelves sometime in Q4, but noted that pricing has not been finalized.

Social work and end-of-life care: issues for debate @SWSCmedia ...

Join us for a Special Evening??@SWSCmedia?on Palliative and End-of-Life care with Malcolm Payne (@MalcolmPayne) on Tuesday (31-July-2012) at 8:00 PM GMT / 3:00 PM EDT?@SWSCmedia.

Planning for living needs to include planning for dying. End-of-life care is not a specialised area of medicine, involving a few specialised social workers working in hospices and hospitals. We all die: and because people around us die, we will all be bereaved. Most people who die are in the older age groups, and anyone who is in their sixties and beyond will probably have given some thought to the death that is nearing them, and may have extremely well-worked out plans, including wills, funeral plans, and lasting powers of attorney all completed.

When people come into the social care system, it is a social work duty to make sure that planning for dying is integral to the help they get in planning for living. This may mean just checking and confirming their own planning and making sure it is well-integrated with social care services as we provide them. Or it may mean helping them make a start on the planning they have put off: we all put off planning in a well-meaning way and some people are just not planful in their lives. But we are not doing a good social work job unless we make sure that people using our services are thinking about what they want from our services, including what they want as they approach death. Because if we have not helped the users of our services know what they want, how can we provide it? And if we don?t discuss with them the options and possibilities that, with our experience and training, we can see in their situations, how can we have secured their informed consent to our intervention with them?

And end-of-life care does not need to be in the ?too difficult? box. There can be powerful emotions around, which slow up the routine care management and form-filling of adult social care, and which may be frightening in their intensity or touch on something in a practitioner?s life. But mostly, people are managing a complicated time in their lives and they need the practical social work that guides them through the problems and the caring social work that helps them with the strength to carry on. We can do that; we do it all the time.

Another thing: to be with someone who is dying, and to help their family and friends feel that they died well, is tremendously satisfying, and practitioners will get more good feedback from this work than anything they have encountered in their practice before.

So, the argument for social work in end-of-life care is: end-of-life is part of life, and anyone who is using social care has started on the path which brings them in touch with their death. Any adult social care service needs to recognise that. A crucial element of adult social care is advance care planning. As soon as we offer some social care, we need also to start the conversation about how this care will change and develop through the remainder of this person?s life. All end-of-life care is about balancing the reality of our increasing disablement and future death with hope for what we can achieve at this time and in the future of our lives. Reality and hope both need to be kept in perspective. The message is a misquote of the old adage: hope for the best and plan for doing something about the things that will get in the way of the best.

This is especially true for older people, but it is also true for people with disabilities and mental ill-health. Although many people in these categories are working for the best possible life, a good life depends on security in planning for everything that might happen. People with long-term progressive disabilities (and most major disabilities are progressive to some degree) need to think about how they and their families want to handle their lives and their care as they go through future stages.

The medical bias that has come from palliative care for dying people does not help. Palliative care is the major source of expertise in end-of-life care. It is also the source of the essential idea that if you manage the symptoms and care needs well, people are enabled to get on with the important things in their lives: their relationships and their own personal development. But because palliative care started from dealing with cancer, AIDS and other diagnosable illnesses, it does not cope well with the uncertainties of long-term conditions and the slowly increasing frailty which is the lot of so many older people. The NHS definition of ?end-of-life care? is one year from the end of life: the problem is that unless you have a clear diagnosed terminal illness, there is no evidence that anyone can tell when you have reached that phase. One answer is the ?surprise? question: practitioners can get nursing and medical colleagues to ask themselves this: ?would I be surprised if this person died in the next twelve months?? If so, they should be getting what the NHS regards as end-of-life care. Once you can get doctors and nurses to decide this, the GP should put the patient on their end-of-life care register, and additional resources and support should come from the NHS, if it is needed, although it usually won?t be until close to that year?s end. Medicine and nursing, like social work, has an ethic of optimism: ?we are going to cure this person, we are going to help them?, but that shouldn?t stop us from thinking about the reality alongside all the progress they make, they will also need to plan for those aspects of their life that will worsen.

The social care answer to the limitations of this NHS concept of end-of-life care is to include a social care approach to end-of-life care in all their practice. This reflects the reality that when social care has been commissioned for someone, it is clear that they have problems in their daily living that are probably going to get worse. So now, right at the outset of their care career, this is the time to start planning what they want as their daily life gets more difficult.? This is the best way of making sure they and their family are looking out for things that might go wrong to prevent them happening, and for thinking about what needs to be put in place to make sure they can maintain their life as they want it for as long as possible.

An essential part of maintaining that life as they want it is their own personal development. It is not a life just staring at daytime television, or playing bingo, when you want to visit museums and read history books; whatever. My experience in palliative care demonstrates the crucial important of the arts, and we need to transfer this experience to social care. People have been told at school that they are no good at art or music, and they?ve gone on believing it throughout their lives. Or they?ve come to believe they are no good at sport, because the school was only interested in the people who could play for the team. Most people can be tremendously stimulated and interested to try out their natural ability in many different arts and activities. We can?t all win Oscars or Olympic gold medals, but we can enjoy it. People can use the advances in digital photography or cheap video production to make films or photographic essays about their life, family or locality, passing on knowledge that only they have. Writing a biography or setting down their opinions can be a revelation to families who have dismissed granny as boring. The internet offers a way of communicating their achievements more widely, or they can just share it with the family or have the quiet satisfaction of knowing that they?re still doing something interesting with their lives.

By trying some new kinds of exercise (Zumba, yoga, pilates, the Alexander Technique) and finding they enjoy it, people can become fitter again, and if they are, their aches and pains will affect them less and they will stay healthier longer.

All of this means that they have more in their lives, so they?re more interesting people, they?ve got something to talk about. So visiting granny becomes, not a boring chore, but an interesting adventure. One of the important objectives of social work is cementing social relationships and creating social solidarity: this is an great way of doing it. This is not only important for people who are dying, but it?s an achievement that members of their family will take into stronger family relationships in the future. ?Look how we all helped grandpa die well? can become ?Look what a strong family we are?.

Another social care answer is to build the skills and confidence in all sorts of services to respond to end-of-life life care needs. Care workers visiting older people?s homes need the training and support to identify when things are going wrong, so that something can be done. Staff in care homes need the skills and confidence to? know: ?We can talk about the difficult things with our residents. Even though we know this resident is getting very frail and ill, we can help her to live until the moment of death as well as possible, where she feels secure and her family can be with her. We know we won?t be blamed if she dies here, so we?re not going to blue-light her into accident and emergency to die lonely in a hospital corridor?. We need to do the advance planning that will enable us to commission the help that people need to die well wherever they are, and we can?t do that advance planning until we?ve had the conversations which will tell us how people want it to be. The social work skills, therefore, are essential to doing the interpersonal work that will allow us to commission services well. Commissioning is not just management, it relies on the interpersonal social work of assessment and advance care planning.

That applies not only in care homes, with and without nursing, but in all the ?homes? where older people may be cared for: people in prisons and on psychiatric wards get old, too. And most especially in people?s own homes, where if commissioning is really responsive to what people want and is properly interwoven with what family members can realistically contribute, we can help people die well.

Social workers and adult social care departments also need to think about the implications of end-of-life care for safeguarding responsibilities. The prevalence studies suggest that a lot of older people?s safeguarding needs arise from psychological abuse or neglect. This can be a particular issue for people coming towards the end of life, not necessarily because their carer?s abuse ramps up, but because people do not adjust to the increasing physical frailty and psychological vulnerability as they approach death. I have experienced situations where women expect (and are expected) to carry on doing all the housework and cooking, where an adult male has still been expected to take the lead in all the decisions, where a spouse has not moderated their sexual demands and where a robust pattern of family disputation has carried on around an exhausted dying person. It is also important to remember that the dying person may also be an abuser in the relationship: their previously dominating behaviour may become hectoring and demanding and the difficult behaviour of a mentally ill dying person still continues to frustrate and anger their carers and they react accordingly. We don?t need to attach blame or criticism.? It is important though to prepare people to plan for increasing frailty and the transfer of responsibilities to other members of the family or friends. Help with moving a frail person around can also be a good preventive step. My experience of safeguarding in end-of-life care is that good preparation prevents a lot of problems, and careful explanation and support deals with many of the problems you can?t prevent.

This is also true for bereavement care, which has always been an essential contribution of social work to palliative care. By giving people a good experience of dying, by being open and helping them to understand what is going on and what they can contribute, people will be much more able to prepare for the death of someone that is important to them and manage the emotional and practical consequence s for their family afterwards. That means they can reorganise their relationship with that person after death. They will look back and integrate them into their lives and their family in a new way, but also look forward and develop a new way of living that incorporates their memories and their past life with the person who has died. People often need good information about how bereavement is likely to affect them. Have we commissioned that? Are we sure that it is always provided helpfully? Some people will still struggle: have we commissioned the services that will help them ? a few advice sessions, some practical help with finance, some conversations with a well-trained volunteer? For the few people who will have a serious adverse reaction, have we commissioned a good quality, well-known service high in public confidence that people know they can go to and that other professions know they can refer to? Across the UK, a well-regarded, well-known, secure local bereavement service has been a low priority for commissioners. As a result, people struggle more with bereavement than they need to, and family life and security is disrupted because of it. We can do better.

And that?s the message for the social work contribution to all end-of-life care: we can do better, and our society will be all the stronger because of it.

Family Home and Life: Fun Kids Activity, Easy and Inexpensive Too

Here?s a really fun project (for all those kids that need something to DO) that they really enjoy. It will be fun for a considerable length of time and you won?t hear ?I?m bored!? five minutes after they start this one.??

Colored vinegar is poured or dripped onto baking soda, and there is foaming and bubbling which of course the kids love. It also creates some really cool designs.

I poured about 1 ? to 2 cups of baking soda on each plate. Then in three small bowls I put about ? cup of white vinegar and added about a dozen or less drops of food coloring to each. I didn?t use red because I had previously used all I had for Red Velvet cake. ?I didn?t mention it and the kids didn?t notice red was missing.

Next I put two spoons in each bowl, one for each child so there wouldn?t be arguing over whose turn it was. An eye dropper works great for this but I only had one of them, it wouldn't work with two kids. Then I placed it all on a towel covered table.

I instructed the kids that they must be careful, this would be a scientific experiment and like scientist they would need to concentrate and observe carefully. No jumping up from the table or playing around and being goofy. They were to dip up a little of the color they chose and carefully pour it on the plate - I didn?t want a big mess to clean up.

    ?

They started getting brave and used two and then three spoons at a time.

It was a great success and we will be doing it again tomorrow. I saved the left over colored vinegar (in small Mason jars of course!). I buy baking soda and vinegar in large quantities at Costco so it is a very inexpensive project. I don?t mind letting them do this one over and over; it?s less cost than painting!

InternetMarketingSpeed.com Podcast Uncovers the Ugly Truth about Podcasting

James Schramko ? Internet Marketing Expert

Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

In a recently posted podcast on his blog InternetMarketingSpeed.com, online marketing master James Schramko interviews veteran podcaster Luke Moulton on the ins and outs of making a podcast, in the process, revealing some less well known details about the experience. The podcast is replete with insider knowledge with Schramko and Moulton providing tips and warnings about the entire endeavor. The podcast effectively primes anybody considering taking up podcasting.

Schramko and Moulton have fellow marketing expert Tim Reid as one of their common denominators. Reid is Schramko?s podcasting partner on Freedom Ocean.com and was Moulton?s co-host in online talk show Small Business Big Marketing. Reid?s name comes up several times in the interview as the two swap anecdotes on their respective podcasting experiences.

The discussion, which runs for about 45 minutes, thoroughly covers the topic of podcasting. It answers many beginner questions, such as ?How professional do you need to go for your first podcast??, ?Does a recording studio help??, ?How do you invite interviewees to record with you?? and ?How do you start a podcast??. It also furnishes key information on technical matters such as the Apple iTunes algorithm, podcast plugin installation and retro-adding to iTunes, podcasting formats, etc.

Alluding to the time Schramko guested on the Small Business Big Marketing Show, Moulton lists some of the benefits of his podcasting experience, ?Getting to talk to experts, learning from it, and certainly, building authority as well. It?s been a fabulous vehicle for that.?

Schramko describes that particular guesting stint as his first involvement with a more professional podcast, complete with an official bump-in and a disclaimer bump-out and executed in a professional studio. Upon receiving a wave of sales after the interview, he realized the power of having that audience.

Building an audience is essential in making an effective podcast and Moulton has some tips on how to successfully do that. He points out that consistency is a key factor, advising podcasters to have 4 to 5 shows a month. He also highlights the importance of getting good interviewees with good stories to tell, and then leveraging their audience as well.

Schramko explains, ?Podcast is a traffic source rather than a product. For me, having a traffic source has been really beneficial for the rest of my business.? Both he and Moulton agree that podcasting is a fantastic platform to build authority and trust. It can be a very powerful business tool when done correctly. ?It?s good to have a strategy when you set up a podcast, have an understanding of where it leads to and what comes next,? states Schramko.

Moulton expresses his thoughts on the growth of podcasting. ?I think it?s a growing trend,? he observes. ?Podcasting is a very popular medium to consume content.? He also mentions that with Apple and the way it is going with its technological innovations, podcasting will only keep on increasing in popularity.

The two also discuss the iTunes ranking algorithm, which is not published, unlike the Google algorithm. Moulton shares his conclusions on how an iTunes show can rank well, mentioning the number of people looking at a podcast iTunes profile and subscribing to the feed, as well as frequency of podcast episodes, to be some of the elements that can influence ranking.

The discussion touches on topics such as professional podcasting production values, the double-headed recording technique, podcasting equipment, Facebook campaigns and Authority Leverage, plus many more. When it comes to the option to polarise an audience, Moulton advises, ?I think being yourself, the people who enjoy your format and the way you talk will gravitate to you, and they?re the audience that you want.?

Signs of Skin Cancer: Biologists Find The Cause Of Pain In The ...

Pain caused by 2 different mechanisms

Apply the ointment, light on, light off - that's how easy it is to cure various forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. However, the majority of patients suffer severe pain during the so-called photodynamic therapy. Why the treatment with ointment and red light can be so painful has now been uncovered by researchers from the RUB. They identified the ion channels involved and signalling molecules secreted by the cancer cells. "The results may provide a starting point for suppressing the pain", says Dr. Ben Novak of the Department of Animal Physiology.

    How the photodynamic therapy works

In contrast to normal cells, cancer cells are equipped with different enzymes and have a much higher metabolism. If you apply a molecule called aminolevulinic acid to the skin in the form of a gel, cancer cells take up considerably more of this substance than healthy cells. If aminolevulinic acid accumulates in the cells, the mitochondria - the power plants of the cells - form the molecule protoporphyrin IX. When irradiated with red light, protoporphyrin IX reacts with oxygen. This produces highly reactive oxygen species, free radicals, which destroy the cancer cells. Approximately ten minutes of red light irradiation is sufficient to successfully treat superficial forms of non-melanoma skin cancers such as actinic keratosis. Doctors also remove warts in this way.

    Painful therapy

"The catch is: it's terribly painful", says Ben Novak. Forty percent of those treated experience pain during the light irradiation, which they assess on a scale of 0 to 10 (whereby 10 corresponds to an excruciating pain like a heart attack) as 7 to 8. Using injections, like at the dentist, it is possible to numb the nerves involved. "But that also always involves a risk", says the Bochum biologist. The scientists led by the RUB professor Dr. Hermann L?bbert have now solved the mystery as to why the treatment hurts at all.

Pain-sensitive cells in the skin are stimulated

The pain is generated by two mechanisms. In a cell culture experiment, the team showed that not only cancer cells but also pain-sensitive nerve cells in the skin take up aminolevulinic acid - and its derivative methyl aminolevulinic acid - from the ointment. Using calcium imaging, the animal physiologists followed the activity of nerve cells which they had treated with aminolevulinic acid and cells that were not exposed to the substance. Treated nerve cells fired when the researchers exposed them to light. In a living organism, this would mean that the cells would send a pain stimulus to the brain. Without the aminolevulinic acid, the pain-sensitive cells remained inactive under red light. In further experiments, the scientists showed that the activity of the nerve cells is caused by sodium channels and voltage-gated calcium channels in the cell membrane. "A drug that targets these channels would, conceivably, be able to suppress the pain - but that's still in the future", says Ben Novak.

    Tumour cells alert nerve cells

L?bbert's team found that pain is generated in the nerve cells themselves, but also in another way. The affected tumour cells secrete a molecule - namely acetylcholine. "This is how they pass the message to other cells: something is wrong, my mitochondria are collapsing right now", Novak illustrates. Acetylcholine acts as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system, where it is harmless. "Previous studies have shown though, that it is very painful when it is injected into the skin". Some of the results have already been published. The researchers are currently preparing the data on the mechanisms of pain generation for publication. This attracted a great deal of interest at the 12th Congress of the European Society for Photodynamic Therapy in Dermatology (Euro-PDT) in Copenhagen in May 2012.

How to Move Your Brand from Invisible to Visible | Jeffbullas's Blog

Geoffrey Rush the Oscar winning actor said he has strived to accomplish two things in his life??Credibility and Visibility?.?How to Move from Invisible to Visible

If you are a job seeker then standing out is important in securing that next job.

Business owners and entrepreneurs need to be noticed to obtain funding and sell their products and services.

To succeed as a musician and artist your work obtains visibility as it is played, displayed and seen.

Authors have the challenge of writing a book that has to stand out in a mountain of 15 million books that will be published in 2012.

If you want to stand out, Seth Godin recommends ?Purple Cows?

    Do something unique and different.

    Pick Yourself

We live in an age where we have the means and the machines to self publish and self market. Technology is democratising publishing and marketing.

The Gutenberg press has been superseded by the digital press. The written word has been set free from the confines of time and space.

On a social web ?you don?t need to wait to be picked to publish. You can ?Pick ?yourself?.

No longer do authors have to pitch or beg a publisher. Amazon is providing the platform for self publishing.

The tools and technologies now allow you to publish short form content in an instant. That could be on Tumblr, Facebook or Google+.

Even your smart phone is a publishing machine in your pocket that can publish images and text whether that is on Instagram or Twitter.

    Emulate then Innovate

Online video adds to the publishing mix which provides the means to communicate with all the power of face to face communication with all its associated subliminal messages.

The motivating power of face to face communications is not restricted to the boardroom or the town hall. YouTube is leveraging the transmission of skills that cannot be transmitted just with words.

You can?t show someone how to dance with text.

Video transmits the non verbal such as facial expressions, gestures, passion and eye contact where serious magic happens.

Reading and writing are fairly recent inventions whereas face to face communication has been honed by tens of thousands of years of evolution.

?What Gutenberg did for writing video is doing for face to face communications?.

Video enables people to view how something is done, then emulate and finally innovate.

    Radical Openess

The hardest part though is being prepared to open up and expose yourself to the world. Content needs to be set free and giving away your secrets is part of this new paradigm of radical?openness!

Credibility is achieved through the display of your skills via your content whether it is carried by music, words or video. Visibility is achieved by building online tribes and followers and sharing with them ?your ideas.

So what can you do to stand out on a very crowded web?

    1. Tap into your passions

Some ?people know from the first awakening of awareness, what they will do for the rest of their life. We all have an inkling of what we love. What keeps you up late at night, what do you read about, what makes you leap into your car and drive for hours?

    This is your engine room.

    2. Leverage your innate abilties

What are you good at? Reading, learning, loving, writing, video production, speaking, cooking or running? This is where you start. Along the way you will discover other skills that you didn?t know you had.

    3. Build your Soapbox

This can be a Facebook page, Google+, Tumblr or a WordPress blog. My pulpit of choice is WordPress technology, with my own domain and self hosted. It is mine, I own it and I have control.

    I like that.

Don?t ?hand over the keys of your content hub and home to a social network ?that can cut you off or ask you to leave with an explanation.

Some people have made their home on a Facebook page or Google+. If you are removed (and it has happened and regularly) then I can only wish you good luck in calling their help line.

    4. Start

This is where the rubber hits the road.

I remember reading a blog post on Hubspot and it said even if you aren?t exactly clear on what you should be publishing ?.just start. This could be writing, creating YouTube videos, posting fashion photos, Publishing images of your art, paper folding or infographics.

In short create content. Don?t wait for the design and branding to be perfect. The refinement can happen on the journey as the crowd tells you what works and what doesn?t.

    Just do it!

The magic is in the movement.

    5.?Know your audience

Understand the persona of the audience(s)who you are targeting.Don?t over complicate this, the audience will become clearer over time. You will hear their voice and see their shadows. You will sense what they want.

    Just listen.

    6. Educate

?How to? articles are always popular. It is the fastest growing category on YouTube. Educate with stories.?A story?s power is twofold. It provides knowledge of how to act and inspiration which is the motivation to act.

Don?t underestimate people?s desire to learn.

    7. Inform

In your target niche people want to know what is happening. Keep them up to date with the latest facts, figures and news. Articles that provide insights into the latest industry news will keep your audience coming back for more.

    8. Inspire

Show people the potential to change their life and show them a future with potential and let them know that dreams can come true.

    A vision is vital.

    7.?Stay on topic

We are all tempted to go off on tangents. You need to keep asking yourself ?does my audience want to read about this?. You can try new angles but the crowd will tell you via the retweets, Google plus ones, shares, likes and comments what they like and don?t like.

    Focus is vital.

    8. Keep it ?simple

As you build knowledge through researching, reading and creating you will be hit with the ?Curse of Knowledge?.

?The better we get at generating great ideas?new insights and novel solutions?in our field of expertise, the more unnatural it becomes for us to communicate those ideas clearly. That?s why knowledge is a curse.?

So keep the message simple and clear of ?industry speak? and acronyms.

    9. Market and promote everywhere

Create a brand and presence on the large vibrant social networks. Publish and promote your content from your blog to as many social network platforms as time and resources allow.

    Be ?ubiquitous?

    10. Build for search engines

Google with its latest updates called ?Panda? and ?Penguin? is valuing unique content that receives social votes, whether that is a ?plus one? on Google, a ?Like? on Facebook or a retweet on Twitter. Use WordPress plugins like ?SEO all in one? or ?Yoast? that create search engine friendly titles, descriptions and tags that make it easy for Google to crawl your site and show up in search engine results.

    11. Build your tribes

Tap into the power of reciprocation. Follow people on Twitter and they will follow you back (some of the time). The great content on your homebase (blog) and the essential engagement with your followers will help you build a tribe. Be real and be willing to show the human side of your self.

Open the hood and reveal your secrets and the tribe will leap in.

    12. Communicate with multi-media

Everyone learns differently. The younger generation prefers a short video. Baby boomers would rather read an article. The LinkedIn types like powerpoint presentations on Slideshare.

Provide the same content in a variety of media.

    13. Hone your writing skills

If you want to write then you need to ?read?. Writing can be learned. The basics are vocabulary, tempting headlines and well structured articles.

Tempting visuals (eg Infographics) will add a little bit of content contagion.

    14. Be relentless

I can?t stress too much how important this is. Producing content once a month isn?t going to cut it. It is like flying plane.

Full throttle for takeoff until you reach cruising altitude.

    ?How About You

Are you visible online? What has worked for you in getting attention? Is it video or is it writing articles and blog posts?

Have you tapped into the power of writing great headlines? Do you need to build a larger and more engaged tribe.

Look forward to hearing your stories.
