Monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe probably dumped from aquarium

Monster goldfish found: A?nearly 18-inch, 4.2-pound goldfish discovered in the depths of Lake Tahoe is not a native species, say scientists.

A new kind of lake monster has been found, in the depths of Lake Tahoe: gigantic goldfish. Researchers trawling the lake for invasive fish species scooped up a goldfish that was nearly 1.5 feet long and 4.2 pounds.

"During these surveys, we've found a nice corner where there's about 15 other goldfish," environmental scientist Sudeep Chandra of the University of Nevada, Reno, told LiveScience. "It's an indication that they were schooling and spawning." The arrival of the fish, which were probably dumped there by aquarium owners, has Chandra worried ? goldfish are aninvasive species?that could interfere with Lake Tahoe's ecosystem.

It's unclear whether the giant fish were introduced as fully grown adults, or while they were still small, Chandra said. But even a small creature can have a big impact, if there are enough of them.

The goldfish are just one of several species of invasive warm-water fishes in?Lake Tahoe. "The invasion is resulting in the consumption of native species," Chandra said. What's more, the invasive fish excrete nutrients that cause algal blooms, which threaten to muddy Tahoe's clear waters. [Photos: Giant Goldfish & Other Freaky Fish]

Fish out of water

Aquarium dumping has become a common practice in the United States and elsewhere, and it's taking a toll on native wildlife. A recent reporton?California's aquarium trade?found that fish owners and importers are introducing hardy, nonnative aquatic species to California waters. "Globally, the aquarium trade has contributed a third of the?world's worst aquatic and invasive species," Williams, who was lead author of the report, told OurAmazingPlanet, a sister site of LiveScience, in January.

While the exact number of aquarium owners dumping fish is unknown, scientists know the practice is occurring because these species could not have ended up in these waters naturally. Between 20 percent and 69 percent of fish keepers surveyed in Texas admitted to dumping, according to Williams.

Other ways that invasive species find their way into natural ecosystems include aquaculture, live seafood, live bait, and fishing and recreation vessels. More than 11 million nonnative marine organisms representing at least 102 species arrive at ports in San Francisco and Los Angeles alone, Williams has found.

The invaders include tropical fish, seaweed and snails. One of the nastiest is a deadly type of seaweed known asCaulerpa. A type of?algae that produces toxic compounds?that kill off fish,?Caulerpa?was eradicated in 2000 (at great expense) from lagoons in Southern California.

Aquarium owners should be more careful when disposing of unwanted fish and other animals, Williams cautioned. "It's pretty simple: Don't dump your fish," she said. Instead, she suggests calling the pet shop that sold the fish or your state department of fish and wildlife. (Euthanasia is another option, but simply flushing fish down the toilet can be problematic ? for the fish and for your plumbing.)

So why do people dump fish? Studies of dumping have shown that size and aggressiveness of the fish are two main factors, Williams said.

The?largest pet goldfish, according to the BBC, was a fish named Goldie that was 15 inches (38 cm) long and weighed more than 2 pounds (0.9 kg).

Police: SUV in Vegas strip shooting, crash found

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A black Range Rover SUV sought in a deadly Las Vegas Strip shooting and crash was found Saturday at an apartment complex east of the famed tourist destination, as police identified a 26-year-old man as a suspect.

Police Capt. Chris Jones said authorities were searching for Ammar Harris, whose previous arrests in the city included counts of kidnapping and pandering, the legal charge for a person who is caught soliciting clients for a prostitute.

Police had been looking for the SUV since early Thursday, when it was involved in a shooting that sent a Maserati into a taxi that exploded, killing three people.

The Maserati's driver, aspiring rapper Kenny Cherry, died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Taxi driver Michael Boldon, of Las Vegas, and his passenger, Sandra Sutton-Wasmund of Maple Valley, Wash., died when the Maserati struck them and caused the taxi to explode in a fiery crash.

Police think an argument at the valet area of the upscale Aria resort-casino led to the shooting, but they haven't shared details. The shooting happened the same night that Morocco-born rapper French Montana was playing at Aria's signature nightclub, Haze.

Police have said investigators were examining surveillance video and enlisting help from federal authorities and agencies in neighboring states to look for the distinctive Range Rover, which has blackout windows and custom black rims and was seen speeding away from the fiery scene.

GOP Senator Miffed Over Obama Pick

WASHINGTON, Feb 20 (Reuters) - A top Republican senator on Wednesday said he was unsatisfied with U.S. Treasury Secretary nominee Jack Lew's response to questions about a loan he received from a previous employer and was requesting more information before the Senate committee considering the nomination is asked to vote.
Lew received a $1.4 million loan in 2002 as part of his employment as an executive with New York University and other loans of more than $600,000 in each of the subsequent three years, according to the questions and answers released by Senator Charles Grassley.
Grassley, who is the No. 2 Republican on the Finance Committee vetting the nomination, asked Lew to describe the terms of the loan including the interest rate and minimum payment requirements, as well as other details, including how it was repaid and whether any portion of it was forgiven.
Lew said he did not recall the interest rate or other specific terms, though he said the university reported income related to housing assistance on his tax forms and that he paid all taxes that were due.
"His lack of recall is distressing, considering how much debt New York University students take on and how much they pay in tuition," Grassley said in a statement accompanying the questions and answers.
Grassley's objections are not expected to derail Lew's confirmation to serve as treasury secretary because Democrats control the Senate 53-45.
Lew previously served as President Barack Obama's chief of staff and White House budget director.
Grassley's comments on Wednesday were in contrast to Lew's confirmation hearing last week when Democratic and some Republican lawmakers on the committee were able to find common ground with Lew on updating the U.S. tax code.
A spokesman for committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Democrat, said Lew has been open and honest with the panel, answering every question posed to him in a timely manner.
"The confirmation process continues to move forward. All members are entitled to ask Mr. Lew follow up questions. And Senator Baucus has, and will continue to, listen to any concerns members of the committee may have," Baucus' spokesman said.
White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Lew had responded to the committee's requests "to an unprecedented degree," providing written responses to 444 questions.
"This follows three separate rounds of questions answered prior to his hearing, his release to the committee of six years of tax returns, a 3.5 hour confirmation hearing and his participation in personal one-on-one meetings (with) 41 senators over the course of two weeks," Schultz said in a statement.
Grassley, who has criticized Lew for investing in a venture capital fund registered in the Cayman Islands that Lew has since divested, has so far reserved judgment on whether he will vote in favor of Lew.
Baucus is expected to hold a vote on Lew's nomination after Congress returns from their break next week. He would then have to be confirmed by the full Senate.

Afghans arrest senior Pakistani Taliban

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan intelligence officers have arrested a senior Pakistan Taliban commander who was hiding out in eastern Afghanistan, a security official said on Tuesday. The capture could help improve strained relations between the two neighbors.

Maulvi Faqir Mohammed was arrested over the weekend in eastern Nangarhar province near the Pakistani frontier, said the security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Two Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed the capture. They also spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Mohammed, who was deputy head of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, fell out with the Taliban's leadership in 2011 for saying the group was in peace negotiations with the Pakistani government. The Taliban recently claimed it patched up relations with the militant commander after the group announced that it was now ready to hold negotiations with the government.

Mohammed, who is reportedly in his 40s, was one of the Pakistani Taliban's top commanders and led the network's operations in the Bajur and Mohmand tribal areas along the Afghan border. He fled to Afghanistan in 2010 after the Pakistani military raided his stronghold in Bajur. Maulvi is an honorific religious title.

Relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been strained because of allegations that Kabul is allowing Pakistani Taliban to shelter and carry out attacks inside Pakistan from the Afghan side of the rugged and mountainous border. Afghanistan and the U.S.-led NATO coalition say Pakistan is not doing enough to go after Afghan Taliban fighters operating from safe havens in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas ? located on the other side of the frontier.

According to the Afghan and Pakistani officials, Mohammed was arrested with at least two of his associates. The Afghan official said he had been brought to a detention center in Kabul.

The Pakistani officials said that at the time of his arrest, Mohammed was trying to cross into Pakistan.

The TTP was set up five years ago as an umbrella organization to unite violent militant groups in Pakistan's tribal areas. It is led by Hakimullah Mehsud who recently offered to start peace talks with the government.

Pakistan's war with the TTP has so far cost the lives of 4,000 soldiers and forced thousands of people from their homes.

Opera confirms downsizing of developer team as it readies for newly adopted WebKit era

Opera confirms downsizing of developer team as it readies for newly adopted WebKit era

Opera's been making quite a few notable changes lately, and now we're finding out it won't be without any repercussions to some of its staff. Earlier today, Opera CEO Lars Boilsen's confirmed to our friends over at TechCrunch that the browser's developer team is indeed downsizing, confirming previous reports about the company having to make changes as part of its recently announced WebKit adoption. Just how many Core positions will be lost in the process is still unclear, however, with Mr. Boilsen only going as far as telling TechCrunch the number of developers working on the overall project is now at "around 600." What's more, Opera's CEO says it's all part of a belief that "WebKit's good enough, to switch, and by doing that we free up a lot of resources," adding that Opera "will still have a Core team but it will be less people going forward."
