London terror-bombing survivor wins at Paralympics

Seven years ago, on the seventh day of the seventh month, Martine Wright?s life was changed forever by a terror bombing.

This week, Wright wore the No. 7 on her jersey when she spiked any doubts that losing her legs would stop her from living.

Representing Britain, Wright competed in the Paralympics Games in the sitting volleyball tournament.

And while the Brits were swept by a more experienced team from Ukraine, the 39-year-old mom wore a gold-medal smile that lit up the gym.

"I will always say I was one of the lucky ones that day," she told The Associated Press earlier this year. "I survived. I don't know how I survived. I've been living my life ever since."

A former marketing manager, Wright was running late when she boarded the London subway on July 7, 2005 just as four of Osama Bin Laden?s followers launched their deadly bomb attacks.

In a flash, Wright would later say, she found herself staring at one of her brand new sneakers skewered on a piece of metal ? along with one of her blown-off feet.

Wright?s life was saved by an off-duty police woman, who wrapped her stumps in a tourniquet. She lost three-fourth of her blood and, at first, her will to carry on.

It was her mom, Wright said later, who set her straight.

?She grabbed my face,? she said. ?At the time it was all scarred and I couldn?t look at myself. And she said, ?Martine, you are still here?.?

Thus began Wright?s slow and often frustrating fight to reclaim her life from the madmen who left her a cripple.

"When you go through something traumatic in your life ... you sometimes lose who you are," she said.

First she had to relearn how to walk, on prosthetic legs. Then she learned to ski, and to fly, and to love. She married and bore a little boy.

?You're thrown in this completely new world,? she said. ?I can live my life now. It's a very gradual process."

But Wright wanted something more, some outlet for her competitive urges. She found it in sitting volleyball, a sport that allows her to compete ferociously ? while sitting on her duff.

Just like standard volleyball, it has six players to a side and three touches are allowed. But in this sport the net is lower ? and the psychic hurdles the players have had to overcome are higher.

Wright?s teamates include a British soldier who lost her legs while fighting in Iraq.

"It's such a negative thing that happened in my life," Wright said. "But I've gained something so positive. It's a miracle in itself."

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Plastic Surgeons ...

New 'Miracle' Skin Healing Cream Now Available to the Public

The wait is finally over as five of the UK's leading plastic surgeons launch HEAL: a revolutionary new healing gel originally created to soothe and reduce inflammation of the skin following surgery (thereby shortening recovery times), but which has also proven to effectively treat everyday injuries such as sprains, sunburn, bruises and scars, making it the ideal medical product to have in the home for all the family to use. The innovative preparation, now available for purchase online, has been developed by The Firm, a specialist skincare group formed by some of the best-known names in plastic and cosmetic surgery including Peter Butler, Martin Kelly, Patrick Mallucci, Simon Withey and Norman Waterhouse of London Plastic Surgery Associates (LPSA). Together, they combine their specialist knowledge in skin anti-ageing, healing and nanotechnology to bring products to the public that actually work.

Each surgeon at The Firm has specific expertise in skin healing: Peter Butler carried out his experimental research on skin ageing and transplantation in the United States (Harvard). Martin Kelly has an MD in antioxidant skin therapy, Patrick Mallucci wrote a thesis on nanotechnology delivery systems and both Simon Withey and Norman Waterhouse have published widely on skin repair in plastic surgery. With a combined clinical experience of over fifty years in treating skin wounds after surgical procedures, they are well equipped to understand the healing process of the skin. In addition, The Firm drafted top French chemist Colette Haydon to perfect the formula in order to achieve the optimal effect, which offers a triple method of action: anti-inflammatory, bruise-solving and scar maturation.

According to Mr Butler, who leads the UK Facial Transplantation team and whose skincare research is internationally acclaimed;

"HEAL was created because no single product existed that combines all the elements of reducing bruising and inflammation as well as accelerating the healing process. This unique gel combines all of this and is completely different to any other 'off the shelf' products that claim to have healing effects on the skin, as they do not contain enough of the active ingredients needed to have an effect. The difference with HEAL is that the key ingredients are present in the right formulations to ensure they penetrate the skin's surface and actually have a dramatic effect on the end result".

Mr Mallucci added; "Over the last three years with the help and expertise of leading French chemist Colette Haydon we have developed HEAL which has a unique combination of active ingredients Arnica Montana and Madecassoside, for the first time ever packaged in a liposomal system, which delivers the agents to where they are needed most - to the deeper layers of the skin. The nanotechnology is designed to deliver the products of HEAL with maximum efficiency to the damaged area".

HEAL combines a triple method of action which works to soothe the closed wound - using Arnica, Haloxyl and Glistin, to reduce heat sensation and discomfort; repair the damage - using Collaxyl protein fractions to promote cellular repair and optimise scar healing with Silicone. For the past two years The Firm have tested HEAL in their clinical practice, London Plastic Surgery Associates where every year hundreds of patients have undergone facelift, rhinoplasty and breast surgery. The feedback from their patients has been overwhelming, with:

- 94% of patients reporting that HEAL was very soothing to bruised areas
- 82% of patients reporting that HEAL reduced swelling after surgery
- 85% of patients reporting that HEAL highly effectively reduced post-surgery bruising
- 97% of patients would continue to use HEAL in the future and recommend the product to others

Fiona Kent, a 37-year-old Executive Personal Assistant - who had a Rhinoplasty and Chin Augmentation last year - says;

"I was amazed at how soothing and comforting the product felt on my tender skin after my operation and it reduced bruising within days. It smells divine and has a consistency that sinks into the skin. HEAL is truly amazing and is certainly a product that I will always have in the home."

HEAL is available online at http://www.healgel.com and costs ?28 for a 30 ml jar.

Check out these cool ideas for leg tattoos for ... - AJEN Entertainment

If you are interested in big bold body art designs for placement on a larger body part in a prominent location, then leg tattoos for men may be worth a look. There are a number of really cool designs for this appendage whether you want a stand alone image inked in a central location on a specific area such as the calf or thigh or prefer a more elaborate creation where the entire skin surface on the upper or lower leg is covered in ink images. Masculine tribal artwork designs are particularly favored for the latter, in dark monochrome ink coloring as these make a strong visual impact but this imagery can also be designed to enhance the male physique by accentuating muscular areas.

The Note's Must-Reads for Wednesday, August 29, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News Jayce Henderson, Carrie Halperin, and Will Cantine

PRESIDENT OBAMA: ABC News' Mary Bruce: " Obama - Don't Boo The RNC, Vote" As Republicans began their first night of convention speakers, President Obama told supporters his opponents will put on an "entertaining" show in Tampa with lots of glitz, but little substance. LINK

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION: ABC News' Emily Friedman and Gregory J. Krieg: " Ann Romney Tells Woman Her Husband 'Will Not Let Us Down'" Ann Romney, the wife of the Republican presidential nominee, told Americans Tuesday that they could trust her husband and in a blunt appeal to women said, "This man will not let us down." LINK

The Hill's Niall Stanage: " In personal address, Ann Romney tells voters 'this man will not fail'" Ann Romney delivered a deeply personal address on behalf of her husband to the Republican National Convention here Tuesday night, telling the capacity crowd that Mitt Romney is a compassionate leader, not the icy-hearted plutocrat that Democrats portray. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Michael Memoli: " Chris Christie touts his record, Romney's, in keynote speech" Chris Christie put his famously combative leadership style up against a status quo in which leaders have become "paralyzed by our desire to be loved," as he made the case that Mitt Romney would tackle the nation's challenges without regard for political consequences, much as he has done as New Jersey governor. LINK

The New York Daily News' Jonathan Lemire: " Ann Romney leads way as Republicans kick off convention by wrapping brutal attacks on President Obama in blanket of sentimentality" Republicans kicked off their convention Tuesday by wrapping their brutal attacks on President Obama in a blanket of sentimentality - and Ann Romney led the way. Mitt Romney's high school sweetheart opened up to America on Tuesday, urging undecided voters to fall in love with her husband as she did. LINK

The Washington Times' Stephen Dinan: " Christie vouches for Romney: 'Solutions will not be painless'" Kicking off Republicans' 2012 nominating convention with a piercing critique of American political life, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday politicians and voters alike have "become paralyzed" by an inability to live within limits, and he challenged both groups to accept that there are some promises government should not make, and cannot meet. LINK

USA Today's Martha T. Moore: " Ann Romney Appeals To Women In RNC Speech" Her mission was to soften her husband's image, but before she spoke about the "boy I met at a dance," Ann Romney made a strong pitch for the support by women that has so far eluded Mitt Romney's Republican party. LINK

USA Today's John Bacon and Catalina Camia: " It's Official: Romney Claims GOP Nomination" Mitt Romney's arduous road to the Republican nomination came to a triumphant conclusion Tuesday when delegates at the party's convention formally selected him to oppose President Obama on Nov. 6 and GOP stars lined up to sing his praises at the podium. LINK

USA Today's David Jackson: " Santorum Lauds Romney, Blasts Obama" Rick Santorum, the last Republican to stand between Mitt Romney and the GOP presidential nomination, paid tribute to the victor on Tuesday night. But the former two-term senator from Pennsylvania spent more time criticizing President Obama during his remarks to the Republican convention. LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Coleen McCain and John D. McKinnon; " Republicans Anoint Romney" Republicans kicked off their national convention Tuesday with a day of speeches aimed at bolstering a weakness in Mitt Romney's bid for the White House-his tepid support among women voters-while building the argument for a policy platform that calls for federal spending cuts and a Medicare overhaul. LINK

The Boston Globe's David Espo: " Ann Romney Says Mitt Is The 'Man America Needs'" After sweeping the Republican presidential nomination, Mitt Romney was praised lovingly by his wife from the stage of RNC and cheered by delegates eager to propel him into the fall campaign against President Obama. LINK

The Boston Globe's Matt Viser and Brian MacQuarrie: " Words Warm, Combative As GOP Nominates Romney" Mitt Romney arrived here from Massachusetts on Tuesday and was formally nominated as the Republican Party's presidential nominee, with his party quickly shifting toward reshaping the images that the country has of him even as their efforts competed for attention with a hurricane gaining strength and expected to strike New Orleans on Wednesday. Ann Romney - his sweetheart, his best friend, and his most important political adviser - began trying to showcase a softer image of her husband. LINK

The Washington Post's Dan Balz: " Chris Christie rouses RNC convention" Mitt Romney may be the Republican Party's presidential nominee and Paul Ryan the ?running mate, but Chris Christie takes a back seat to no one in the GOP. The New Jersey governor was once a possible rival to Romney. Although he insisted that he didn't think he was ready to be president, Christie had to keep swatting away speculation and encouragement to jump into the race at a time when the party was still learning to love Romney. LINK

Politico's Alexander Burns: " GOP vows to "Save America," boost Mitt" The Republican Party unveiled Mitt Romney as its general-election candidate Tuesday night, seeking to reintroduce him to the electorate as a champion of political reform and conservative business values who would turn back the anti-capitalist policies of the Obama administration. In a lineup of speeches capped off by Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Republicans tackled the dual challenges that define Romney's general-election fight: convincing the American people that he has a plan for economic recovery and rebutting a summer's worth of harsh attacks from the Obama campaign. LINK

Bloomberg's Catherine Dodge and Lisa Lerer: " GOP Nominates Romney As Wife Downplays Storybook Marriage" With New Jersey's delegate vote count tonight, Mitt Romney surpassed the 1,144 votes he needed to become the 2012 Republican Party's presidential nominee. That moment during the roll call of states drew thunderous applause inside the Tampa Bay Forum, where the party opened its convention a day late after Hurricane Isaac passed the state yesterday on its way toward New Orleans. Kenya Tour- Beaches | ArticloPedia

One of the most exiting experiences on a Kenya tour is the a tour of the beaches. For ages this nation was only accessible via the Indian Ocean route. This Ocean posed challenges to explorers, traders and colonialists from Portugal, Arabia, China, India and other countries in Europe only to reward them with a spectacle of the land with abundant natural resources. Currently, this very Kenyan coast is the most popular gateway for both locals and international tourists on a Kenya tour; as a matter of fact, the Kenya tour will automatically commence on the beaches of the very ocean upon arrival.

The beaches on the Kenyan coast are ideal for a tour year round. The idyllic white sand-beaches fringed by coconut-palms being lapped by ocean warm waters safeguarded by coral reefs will leave a tourist yearning for more. Generally, the Kenya and its coastline is a tropical idyll of squashy-white sand and mild sea breeze, here the passing day is evidenced by a slow arc of the sun. The pace of life on these beaches is particularly slow, leisurely, more relaxing and peaceful.

Kenyan beaches are a continuous line of blue, a cerulean strip of ocean that falls in the protective shelter of reef. Among the most exciting experiences on a Kenya tour of the beaches is the Safari Trail. The squashy white sands on the beaches melt away under one?s feet as the sparkling blue waters of the ocean invitingly attracts one to indulge in, swimming, scuba-diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, yachting, cruising speed-boating and boating in traditional dhows. The beaches are languid, sun drenched and do expand from a 14th century town (Lamu) in the north, then to the spectacular beaches of Malindi, Watumu and the early ghost town Gedi to the major beaches of Mombasa in the south. On a Kenya tour, a Safari Trail through these places will be an ultimate experience.

This country is up for adventure and recreation as far as the Kenya tour to the beaches is concerned. A Kenya tour to the Beach package will comprise major attractions such as coral reef viewing, indulgence in water sports, scuba and deep sea diving, big-game fishing not to mention cruises and boating in traditional dhows. All these are power packed thrills combined with recreation only found on a Kenya tour to the beaches.

A Kenya tour to the beaches will again reveal the luxurious beach resorts and hotels which not only offer comfortable retreats from the sand and surf, as they also delicately commune the rich culture of this land through Swahili cooking, hospitality customs, ethnic decoration and scenic sites.

Once more, the tropical setting, negligent ambiance, soft sandy beaches, safe swimming waters and equally pleasurable beach resorts and hotels makes the Kenya tour to the beaches a trip to remember for life for any outgoing tourist. If for any case this pleasurable experience on the Kenya tour to the beaches, is simply not enough to satisfy ones tour appetite, the tropical rainforests, game reserves and national parks, the rift valley, lakes, mountain peaks, bustling marketplaces and lively cities and the Rich Kenyan culture are always there to fall back on.

DIY Easy Geometric Gem Clay Mobile - Home - Creature Comforts ...

A couple weeks ago I posted an instagram snapshot of a quick little DIY Geometric Gem Clay Mobile that I'd made with the clay I had leftover from my DIY Clay Nursery Mobile project, and offered to share a tutorial if anyone was interested. Since several of you were, I've put together a quick step-by-step guide so that you can easily make your own. The process and techniques are almost the same as my previous DIY, so I'll be referring to that for most of the project. Grab you're supplies and let's start crafting!

Supplies needed:

  • Rolling pin (the non-stick variety is preferable)
  • Premier Stone Clay - available at craft stores such as Michael's or?online
  • Elmer's Paper Craft Gel Glue
  • Metallic Pen-Touch Paint Pen by Sakura (extra fine point) | available at craft supply stores
  • Craft knife
  • Twine
  • Freezer paper or waxed paper (to protect your work surface)
  • Scissors (optional)

Cover a smooth hard working area with a piece of waxed or freezer paper (freezer paper, waxed side up works the best). Use your rolling pin to flatten your clay into a smooth disk. The finished piece should be rolled to about 1/4 inch thick. Use your craft knife to carefully cut triangular shapes into your clay (you do not need to cut all the way through). You can make this process more efficient by cutting multiple triangles on each rolled disk of clay (as seen demonstrated in the image above).

Now cut away the outside edges and separate each triangle from one another. Cut off the two corners at the wide end of the triangle (shown above). You can make the angle of these cuts as deep or as shallow as you'd like.

Dab your finger into a bit of water and smooth it along the edges of your shape. You can smooth the front and back as well. Use a bamboo skewer to make a small hole at the top of your geometric gem shape.

Make as many gems in as many different sizes as you'd like. For my mobile I used eight gems in a variety of sizes from small (around 3/4") to large (around 2").

Allow your gems to dry completely (24 hours is optimal). You may need to prop them up on their side against something so that air can circulate around them.

Once your gems are dry, you can add detail to them using a metallic paint pen. The following are the steps I used on mine, but you can draw inside your shapes however you'd like.

First start by drawing around the inner outline of your shape. then draw two short lines angled downward from the lower points on your gem shape.

Connect those two lines with a straight line across the middle. Where the first two downward angled lines ended, draw two long lines down until they meet at the narrow point of your gem.

Draw two short lines angled upward and out from where your last two lines started. Finish the design by drawing three straight lines within the upper portion of your shape...these should mirror the first three lines that you drew.

Hooray! Your gem is complete. Now you can draw the same design on the backside and repeat this process with all remaining gems.

To assemble your mobile place a small dot of glue into the hole at the top of your gem. Knot the end of a piece of twine and place the knotted end inside the hole. Use your bamboo skewer to press in and ensure that that the twine is fully embedded inside the hole. Lay your glued piece aside and repeat process with all remaining gems.

Tip:?I kept all my twine portions long (around 26 inches each)?until the very end so that I had the ability to arrange them at different lengths depending upon how they looked when strung together.

Once the glue has dried, arrange the gems in whatever order you'd like and tie all twine portions together in one knot to secure. Snip off any uneven ends.

Hang your gem mobile on a nail or with a piece of Japanese making tape!

Bonus idea: Pierce a small hole through the top of a clay gem while it is still soft. Once dry you can use it to embellish a gift. Just string the gem onto a piece of twine or ribbon and you're done, tie it to your present and you're done!

I hope you liked this sweet and simple project. If you want more, I invite you to check out all my past Creature Comforts' DIY projects right here. xo Ez

Talking of Sex: Relationships and sex education: a drop of 25% in ...

There was an article published in the Daily Mail at the weekend stating that sex education has had little impact on teenage pregnancy rates over the past 40 years.

In fact the statistics confirm what those of us who work in sexual health or with young people already know that teenagers are less likely to get pregnant now than they were 40 years ago, and looking at the statistics from 1998 when the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy was launched there is a clear decline in rates. Between 1998 and 2010, the conception rate for under 16s has fallen by 22%, and the rate for under 18s has fallen by 25%.

The Teenage Pregnancy Strategy focused on and highlighted the good work being done, and means that we are clear about what works to improve young people's sexual health and wellbeing; improving access to sexual health services, an open and accepting attitude toward teenage sexuality; good quality sex and relationships education in school and the community; and supporting parents to talk to their children about relationships.

We know how to reduce rates of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and we need to get on with making that happen consistently across the UK.

You can read Brook?s factsheet on the teenage pregnancy rates online here.

Mars Rover Sends Amazing Photos, 1st Human Voice from Red Planet

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has beamed home the first human voice ever sent from another planet, as well as some spectacular new images of its Martian environs.

The 1-ton Curiosity rover broadcast a pre-loaded greeting from NASA administrator Charlie Bolden, who congratulated the mission team for getting the huge robot to Mars safely. While the significance of the audio accomplishment is largely symbolic, NASA officials hope it presages a more substantial human presence on the Red Planet down the road.

"With this, we have another small step that's being taken in extending the human presence beyond Earth, and actually bringing that experience of exploring the planets back a little closer to all of us," said Curiosity program executive Dave Lavery, invoking the famous line late astronaut Neil Armstrong uttered from the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969.

"As Curiosity continues her mission, we hope the words of the administrator will be an inspiration to someone who's alive today, who will become the first to stand upon the surface of the planet Mars," Lavery told reporters today (Aug. 27). "Like the great Neil Armstrong, they'll be able to speak aloud ? in first person at that point ? of the next giant leap in human exploration."

The mission team also unveiled today a stunning 360-degree panorama of Curiosity's Gale Crater landing site, showing in crisp detail some of the landforms scientists want the six-wheeled robot to explore. [Video: Curiosity's Martian Panorama]

Searching for habitable environments

Curiosity touched down inside Mars' huge Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5, tasked with determining whether the Red Planet could ever have supported microbial life.

For the next two years, Curiosity is slated to explore Gale and the crater's 3.4-mile-high (5.5 kilometers) central peak, the mysterious Mount Sharp. The $2.5 billion rover is outfitted with 10 different science instruments to aid its quest, including a rock-zapping laser and gear that can identify organic compounds ? the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it.

Curiosity's ultimate destination is the base of Mount Sharp, where Mars-orbiting spacecraft have spotted signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water. These interesting deposits lie about 6 miles (10 km) from the rover's landing site as the crow flies.

The new 360-degree panorama, which is composed of 140 images snapped by Curiosity on Aug. 8 and Aug. 18, shows Mount Sharp's many-layered foothills, as well as its upper reaches stretching into a brown-tinged Martian sky. [Gallery: Photos from Curiosity's 4th Week on Mars]

The mosaic has Curiosity's scientists licking their chops.

"I think when those of us on the science team looked at this image for the first time, you get the feeling, 'That's what I'm talking about,'" said Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena. "That is why we picked this landing site."

While researchers are most excited about the potential discoveries that await them on Mount Sharp's flanks, the scenic beauty captured in the panorama got their hearts racing, too, Grotzinger said.

The terrain "looks like it was something that comes out of a John Ford movie," he said.

A year away?

Though Curiosity took its first short test drive last week, it still hasn't strayed far from its landing site, which the mission team dubbed "Bradbury Landing" in honor of the late sci-fi author Ray Bradbury.

The rover should be ready to head out in a few days, Grotzinger said ? but Curiosity won't be going straight to Mount Sharp. Rather, the first stop is Glenelg, a site 1,300 feet (400 meters) away where three different types of terrain come together in one place.

It'll likely take the rover a month or two to reach Glenelg, where it will spend another large chunk of time performing science operations. Curiosity could be ready to turn its wheels toward Mount Sharp by the end of the year, Grotzinger has said.

But it'll take Curiosity a while to reach the mountain. The rover will probably cover a maximum of about 330 feet (100 m) per day after it's fully checked out, researchers have said. And it may stop along the way to Mount Sharp to study interesting landforms.

"It'll probably take us a year to get there," Grotzinger said.

Also today, Curiosity scientists announced that tests of the rover's onboard chemistry laboratory, SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars), are going well. SAM can detect organics in Martian soil, and it will sniff the Red Planet's atmosphere for methane, which may be a sign of life as organisms here on Earth are known to generate the gas.

The SAM tests are part of an ongoing checkout of Curiosity and its science instruments, which has proceeded very smoothly so far.

"Curiosity, as you've gathered by now, is a very complicated beast with lots of parts, and the project's being very systematic about testing things out," said SAM principal investigator Paul Mahaffy, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

"We think of ourselves a little bit as the nose of Curiosity, and we're getting ready to start sniffing," Mahaffy added.

Publishers Start Signing Up For PostRelease?s Content Marketing Network

post-release"Content marketing" is a phrase I hear more and more these days, as brands increasingly create their videos, blog posts, and other forms of content to promote themselves, rather than just relying on traditional advertising. Now a startup called PostRelease has built what is, essentially, an ad network for content marketing, so that advertisers can ensure that their content gets distribution, while publishers can make some revenue. CEO Justin Choi says that publishers just add a few lines of code to their site (or installing the PostRelease plugin for WordPress and vBulletin) and create a template for sponsored posts, then the sponsored content starts running automatically. He argues that PostRelease should be more appealing to publishers than a service like Outbrain, because it isn't linking people to content on other sites, so they aren't necessarily driving readers elsewhere. Right now, for blogs, the sponsored posts always appear as the second post from the top, though Choi says the placements may become more customizable over time.

Well?s Social List-Making App Thinks Outside The ?To-Do?

wellWell, a new social and?collaborative?to-do list application from former Digg, Blip.fm and Rackspace engineers, is officially launching today on iPhone, web and mobile web.?But according to ex-Digg engineer and Well CEO Arin Sarkissian, the focus for the application isn't only on typical "to-dos" which is why the app's name doesn't include "to-do" in its title.?Instead, the idea for Well is to serve as a repository for any type of list, whether that's books to read, movies to see, things you like or don't like, or even a collection of things you may be comparing in advance of a future purchase.
