Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, this town is big enough for both of them.

For the moment.

But come April 26, the first day of the NFL draft, Stanford's Luck and Baylor's Griffin ? the top two quarterbacks at the scouting combine this week ? will head in different directions to begin their pro careers. In a league so focused on passing, they are the shiny superstars in the making, players likely to be inexorably linked as the first quarterbacks to go 1-2 in the draft in more than a decade.

Their styles are different, but Luck and Griffin have notable similarities. They grew up in Texas about 200 miles apart ? Luck in Houston, Griffin in tiny Copperas Cove in the middle of the state ? and each was an A-student. Both were cornerstones in the revival of moribund college football programs.

Likewise, they will be expected to do that in the pros. By all indications, the Indianapolis Colts plan to use the No. 1 pick on Luck, who would take the torch ? either immediately or eventually ? from future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

While saying it's "absolutely" important to him to be the top pick, Luck said he doesn't view it as a head-to-head competition with Griffin.

"Good thing about football is it's a team game," Luck said. "Robert's a great quarterback, a great competitor, a great guy, really easy to get along with. I don't get motivation by competing against him for something. I don't think it's one player versus another by any means."

St. Louis has the No. 2 pick and already has a quarterback in Sam Bradford. The Rams are in prime position to trade that selection, however, especially with franchises such as Cleveland, Washington and Miami in need of a quarterback.

The last time quarterbacks were chosen in succession at the top of the draft was 1999, when Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb and Akili Smith were selected 1-2-3. A year before that, in the Exhibit A of divergent career paths, Manning was taken first by Indianapolis, and Ryan Leaf second by San Diego.

Although the Colts are picking first again, and appear to be locked in on Luck, there is no indication that either Luck or Griffin is headed for a Leaf-like flameout. (Of course, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, virtually every NFL scout and draft maven now says it was plain to see Leaf would be a bust, even though Manning-Leaf was a hotly contested debate at the time.)

Regardless, there are no such red flags with Luck and Griffin, only a division along the lines of style. While Luck is mobile and not drop-back dinosaur, he is at least closer to the traditional quarterback mold of a Manning than is Griffin, who, although an accurate passer, is a more dangerous runner than Luck and played in a less-conventional college offense.

"I look at both of them as two unbelievable prospects," said Denver Broncos executive John Elway, a former Stanford quarterback and No. 1 overall draft pick to whom Luck has been compared. "I think that if you look at what they both did this year with Andrew at Stanford and 'RG3' down at Baylor, they're two tremendous talents ? tremendously mature, intelligent guys that I look at as two [who] are going to have a lot of success in the NFL."

The Colts have until March 8 to decide whether to pay a $28-million bonus to keep Manning, who sat out last season recuperating from multiple neck surgeries. One scenario ? perhaps prohibitively expensive ? is to keep him and draft Luck, allowing the young quarterback to learn at his elbow the way Aaron Rodgers learned behind Brett Favre in Green Bay.

Luck said he'd be perfectly comfortable with that, calling Manning "my hero growing up." Griffin echoed that, saying that if the Colts were to make him the top pick and keep Manning, "I'd hold that clipboard with pride."

Griffin, who like Luck opted not to throw for scouts at the combine, said he is looking forward to his campus pro day and beyond to disprove "a misconception that comes with being a dual-threat quarterback: You're run first, throw second. I think I've proven I'm throw first, then run if I need to."

The success in Carolina of last year's No. 1 pick, Auburn's Cam Newton, can only bolster Griffin's stock. Newton not only made the transition from a college spread offense to the Panthers' pro-style scheme much more quickly and seamlessly than most observers expected, but also was named the league's offensive rookie of the year.

In meeting with the media this week, Griffin addressed the comparison to fellow Heisman Trophy winner Newton.

"As a runner he is a little more shifty than I am, but I'm faster than he is," said Griffin, who rushed for 2,254 yards and 33 touchdowns in 41 college games. "[I am] more experienced in the passing game in college. Not that I'm more polished and he's not polished, just we threw it a little bit more at Baylor than they did at Auburn. Other than that, confidence-wise his confidence is off the charts. I try to keep my confidence on the charts. But I'm a confident guy as well."

In a way, Griffin was standing a little taller this week ? at least officially. It's not uncommon at this point in the year for people to search for a prospect's flaws, a rationale for why he won't succeed at the next level. The talk in some circles was that Griffin was shorter and lighter than the 6 feet 2, 220 pounds at which Baylor listed him.

This constant heat on the paper made the paper hot and ultimately it caught fire. But the fire could start only when the sun's rays were concentrated to a small point. This magic trick explained me vividly the power of concentration. In every walk of life, we need to be fully conscious. When we focus on something properly, our energy doesn?t get dissipated on irrelevant activities or thoughts.

Thus whatever we do putting our full concentration, the chances of success in the task becomes higher. News that the faster-than-light neutrinos that caused a sensation in September may have a mundane explanation ? a faulty cable connection ? comes as little surprise. There has never been a convincing physical explanation for the result.

In the weeks following the original announcement theoretical physicists wrote dozens of papers attempting to explain the results, many of which found their way to me. As an editor at the journal Physical Review Letters, my job is to consult experts in the field and ultimately decide which manuscripts to publish. I saw nothing to convince me that they had cracked it.

First, a quick refresher. The result came from the OPERA neutrino detector based at the Gran Sasso laboratory near L'Aquila, Italy. OPERA detected neutrinos fired from CERN, about 730 kilometres away in Geneva, Switzerland, and found they arrived 60 nanoseconds earlier than expected, implying they zipped along at one part in 40,000 faster than the speed of light.

This is as reassuring to a physicist as telling a mathematician, "I added 2 and 2 and got slightly more than 4". Physicist Jim Al-Khalili publicly offered to eat his boxer shorts if the results are proved correct.

The experiment was not conceptually difficult. It calculated the neutrinos' speed as you would do for any moving object: distance divided by time. However, the researchers had to precisely measure the neutrinos' path through the Earth and synchronise the clocks at each end to an accuracy of a few parts per million. It now seems they made an error, though we are awaiting confirmation.

Another possibility still worth considering is that the result is a statistical fluke. Data are sometimes described as "statistically significant" if they reach the 95 per cent confidence level. This is a disquietingly lax standard. It doesn't mean that there is a 95 per cent chance there is an effect. It means "supposing there is no effect, you will still get data showing one 5 per cent of the time". Do hundreds of trials and you will see many spurious effects, even at the 99 per cent confidence level. Quite a number of experiments have disagreed with the standard model of particle physics at the 99 per cent confidence level but have fizzled out after more data was taken.

However, the OPERA team claim a confidence level greater than 99.9999999 per cent. In other words you would have to do billions of trials in order to expect to get this result by chance.

So why were physicists underwear-eating-sure that there must be a mundane explanation? Because, when it comes to data that conflicts with established theory, we tend to be Bayesians ? we take our prior confidence in the established theory into account. As Andrew Pontzen of the University of Cambridge and Hiranya Peiris of University College London wrote in New Scientist in 2010: "Bayesian statistics shows us that the anomalies in the data are insufficient on their own to motivate drastic revision." We also need a plausible theory.

Sure enough, the theories soon started rolling in. In the first few weeks after the announcement, physicists produced more than a paper a day on the subject. Many put forward new models explaining how neutrinos could travel faster than light. The rest either tried to find flaws in the experimental techniques or pointed out constraints which rule out most of the new models.

Many of these papers were submitted to Physical Review Letters. Thus far we have received over 50 papers and published just three, all in the last category (Physical Review Letters, vol 107, p 181803, p 241802 and p 251801).

All reach the same conclusion: models which explain the result by breaking relativity are ruled out. It doesn't matter how you do it, if you break relativity, your idea is a goner.

How so? The paper by Andrew Cohen of Boston University and his Nobel laureate colleague Sheldon Glashow (vol 107, p 181803) is the easiest to explain. Imagine an aeroplane going faster than the speed of sound. It creates a shockwave of air which you hear as a sonic boom, and which carries energy away. An analogous thing happens to a particle going faster than the speed of light: it loses energy via a shockwave of particles. And yet the OPERA neutrinos arrived with no energy lost. So there was no shockwave and thus no faster-than-light travel.

Whenever a paper proposing a new model arrived on my desk, I would ask the authors to explain how they circumvented this constraint. None did so convincingly.

So even before the faulty-cable-connection news, boxer-betting Bayesians were resting easy. Now, they are likely to move on to something else.

comScore: Long-Form Video Content Views On The Rise In January

comScore just released its monthly U.S. online video data, and while viewership dipped slightly in January 2012 (from December), long-form video content views are on the rise. According to comScore, 181 million U.S. Internet users watched nearly 40 billion videos of online video content in January, compared to 182 million users who viewed 43.5 billion videos in December. And 84.4 percent of the U.S. Internet audience viewed online video in January. The duration of the average online content video was 6.1 minutes (up from 5.8 minutes in December), while the average online video ad was 0.4 minutes. Once again, YouTube ranked as the top online video content property in January with 152 million unique viewers, followed by VEVO with 51.5 million, Yahoo Sites with 49.2 million, Viacom Digital with 48.1 million and Facebook.com with 45.1 million. Google Sites (YouTube) generated the highest number of views at 18.6 billion, followed by Hulu with 877 million and VEVO with 717 million. The average viewer watched 22.6 hours of online video content, with YouTube (7.5 hours) and Hulu (3.2 hours) seeing the highest average engagement.

Nasty 'superbug' emerging? Strikes otherwise healthy, young patients

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? University at Buffalo researchers are expressing concern about a new, under-recognized, much more potent variant of a common bacterium that has surfaced in the U.S.

"Historically, in Western countries, classical strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have caused infections mostly in sick, hospitalized patients whose host defense systems are compromised," says Thomas Russo, MD, professor in the Department of Medicine at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and head of its Infectious Disease Division.

"But in the last 10 to 15 years, a new variant of it has begun causing community-acquired infection in young, healthy individuals," he says. "This variant causes serious, life-threatening, invasive infections and is able to spread to other organs from the initial site of infection."

Perhaps most important, says Russo, these hypervirulent strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have the potential to become highly resistant to antibiotics, similar to Escherichia coli and classical Klebsiella pneumoniae.

"These hypervirulent strains are the next 'superbugs' -in-waiting," he says. "If they become resistant to antibiotics, they will become difficult, if not impossible to treat."

With recent funding from the National Institutes of Health under a program to fund high-risk, high-reward research, Russo and his UB colleagues are studying the microbiology of the new variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae in an effort to identify the genes that make it hypervirulent so they can figure out how to stop it in its tracks.

"Infections due to highly resistant bacteria are becoming increasingly problematic," says Russo. "We are continually threatened by a 'post-antibiotic' era. The combination of a bacterium that is both highly virulent and resistant to antimicrobials is double-trouble."

The researchers' concern stems from the fact that classical Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the bacterial species that can easily acquire mobile genetic units, called plasmids, that contain multiple genes that confer high levels of antimicrobial resistance.

"That's in part why we're concerned," says Russo. "We know that this bacterium has the potential to acquire these plasmids and it almost certainly will."

He notes that most bacteria that have proven to be resistant to most or all of the drugs currently available do not usually infect healthy members of the community.

"What is alarming about the hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is that they do possess the potential to infect healthy people," says Russo. "If this hypervirulent bacterium also becomes highly resistant to antimicrobials, we will have a significant problem to manage. We hope that our research and that of others can prevent this possibility."

While the new hypervirulent variant was first seen exclusively in in the Pacific Rim, it has now been found in several cities in North America, including Buffalo, and in Europe, Canada, Israel and South Africa as well. The UB researchers characterize it as "under-recognized" both by physicians and microbiology laboratories.

The disease most commonly presents as a liver abscess, which is not typical for otherwise healthy patients.

"This new variant presents with unique and scary features: first is its tendency to infect young, healthy people in the community and the second is its unique propensity for metastatic spread to other parts of the body," says Russo. "It spreads to sites beyond the initial source of the infection, such as the lungs, the central nervous system and the eye, potentially causing loss of vision. If infection spreads to the brain, there can be brain damage as well. Between 10 and 30 percent of cases are fatal."

In Buffalo, this hypervirulent variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified in an otherwise healthy, young person several years ago. The patient, who was in his 20s, was hospitalized for several months before making a full recovery. Similar cases are causing concern throughout the international infectious disease community.

At the moment, most cases of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae resolve if treated aggressively with antibiotics and drainage of abscesses; however, some infections, despite optimal treatment, result in a persistent morbidity or death, Russo says.

He notes that the potential for the bug to acquire drug resistance is adding a sense of urgency to the research.

Russo says that microbiology labs should be aware that an important characteristic of these hypervirulent strains (also known as hypermucoviscous strains) is that when bacterial colonies grown on a solid surface in the laboratory are stretched by a common microbiology tool, called an inoculation loop, they form a viscous "string" greater than 5 millimeters in length.

Russo's team at UB is now beginning to develop a clearer picture of this formidable bacterial opponent.

In November, he and his colleagues published a PLoS ONE paper that showed that hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acquires iron more efficiently than the usual strains of K. pneumoniae.

"With the NIH grant, we hope to further elucidate the precise details of the bacterial factors that are responsible for hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acquiring iron so much more efficiently," he says. "The goal of this line of research is that these iron-acquisition factors possessed by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae will then lend themselves as therapeutic or vaccine targets so that we can better treat or prevent infection."

In addition to Russo, other UB researchers working on hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae are Alyssa S. Shon, an Infectious Diseases Fellow in the Department of Medicine; Janet Beanan, Ulrike MacDonald, Daniel Metzger and Ruth Olson, all research technicians in the Department of Medicine, and Alex Pomakov, a UB undergraduate majoring in biomedical sciences. Mark P. Visitacion, MD, a former Infectious Diseases Fellow in the UB Department of Medicine, was also part of the team.
