Most Top Stocks Rise; Alexion Pops On Takeover ... - Investors.com

Most top stocks from IBD's 33 sector groups rose Tuesday, led by biotech issues.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) was the biggest winner, jumping 7.03, or 6%, to 117.08 after Bloomberg reported that Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding (RHHBY) last week approached Alexion about a takeover.

The report, citing a person with knowledge of the matter, said Alexion rejected the overture but hired Goldman Sachs (GS) to help prepare for a takeover attempt.

Alexion, which develops drugs to treat rare blood disorders, briefly cleared a long, undefined pattern with resistance at around 120, before paring the gain. Volume was more than triple its daily average. It was the stock's biggest gain since July 12, after an initial report that Roche wanted to buy Alexion.

Meanwhile, Questcor Pharmaceuticals (QCOR) soared in post-session trading following a better-than-expected Q2 earnings report. The stock had hit a new high during the regular session, climbing 89 cents to 51.91 in volume that was modestly above average. It ended the session 3% above a 50.30 flat-base buy point.

Elsewhere, Evercore Partners (EVR) rose 1.43, or 3%, to a new high of 46.59. That put the investment bank 4% beyond a 44.63 buy point in an irregular consolidation.

3D Systems (DDD) suffered the biggest loss, plunging 2.36, or 5%, to 48.16 in huge volume. The maker of 3D printers said Q2 profit rose 11% to 20 cents a share, below Wall Street's forecast of 24 cents.

The stock sank below a 49.85 buy point in a late-stage cup-with-handle base after clearing the entry on Monday. On the plus side, 3D got support at its 50-day line and ended in the upper half of its trading range.

No Gaming Mouse Is This Exciting, But The New Naga Comes Close

This is the most dramatic gaming mouse trailer of 2013. It is for a mouse that leaps across canyons in a sports car in slow motion. The new Razer Naga does not do that, but it's wonderfully clicky.

Last year I pitted three MMO gaming mice against each other in a battle of the buttons, and Razer's 12-button Naga did not win. It was a lovely piece of hardware, but the 12 side buttosn were smooth and hard to tell apart, and despite a set of swappabel ergnomic bits, the Naga just wasn't as comfortable as the competition.

So, for the 2013 edition of the Naga, Razer fixed those problems.

No Gaming Mouse Is This Exciting, But The New Naga Comes CloseS

It's certainly a more comfortable hand rest than its predecessor, for one, and it didn't have to resort to hot swapping gimmicks to achieve that. The buttons on the side are now mechanical (clicky!) and ridged, making it much easier to feel out individual keys with your thumb. The new scroll wheel tilts side-to-side for additional input, and there's even a left-handed version for the freaky people in the audience.

The only thing I'm not liking about the 2013 Naga is the finish. I'm used to soft, rubberized plastic, and this one somewhat gritty.

Still, a marked improvement over the previous generation, addressing every concern I had, and only adding one new one. That's almost worth an incredibly dramatic debut trailer. Almost.

The new Razer Naga will be on sale shortly at the Razer store for $79.99.

97% A Hijacking

All Critics (74) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (72) | Rotten (2)

This isn't an action picture; it's a picture about the suspense and terror of inaction.

Gripping and tightly focused.

Lindholm rations the meat and potatoes of plot to keep us captive at the bargaining table. It's a sadistic ploy that produces a real payoff.

A Hijacking is one of those perfect films that crop up every few years to prove that with true artistry, even the most exhausted genre can yield something new, rich, and strange.

Lindholm justifies his confidence in a visual approach that's refreshingly realistic.

To refuse to call A Hijacking a thriller is not to say it isn't thrilling, in a dryly cerebral way.

... has an embedded feel without being a real-life report or documentary at all. It's a fictional film that hits both with blunt force and a surprising amount of complexity.

A Hijacking is more about one incident than about how it relates universally, but in thoughtfully exploring the specifics and emotions of that incident, Lindholm is able to show how modern life sometimes seems devoid of any accord.

A lean, stressful nail-biter, smart, well-written, nicely shot and wonderfully performed.

[Omar and Mikkel are] like Marcus and McTeague in Frank Norris's 1899 novel, handcuffed to each other in a struggle that could well end in mutually assured destruction.

Tobias Lindholm's slow-burning thriller makes a bid for verisimilitude that extends well beyond the use of natural light and handheld cameras.

Though the acting in "A Hijacking" is superb, the film is strictly a "follow-the-dots" offering. This is not entertainment. It is another overwhelmingly depressing foray into corporate greed.

"A Hijacking", if eligible, is an early contender for Best Foreign film at the 2014 Academy Awards.

It's an effective piece of work that will leave you longing for a shower, a nap, and a warm meal.

It's a radical departure from any thriller in stateside theaters.

A nail-biter of the highest order, A Hijacking is astonishingly emotional, gritty, and terrifying -- a genuine directorial achievement that should not be missed.

When the gut-wrenching conclusion of A Hijacking comes in the form of a single, random act, it's only then you realize how far you've been pulled into its emotional core.

A Hijacking delivers all the thrills the title suggests, but in none of the places you'd expect them.

The danger never reaches the level of chaos, but the subtext and metaphor in the slow-moving humanistic commentary on the motivations and byproducts of capitalism make for an intriguing film.

Syrian Electronic Army Hits Thomson Reuters Twitter Feed

Thomson Reuters SEA Hack

The Thomson Reuters Twitter account is the latest target of hackers from the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA).

Last night, the @ThomsonReuters Twitter account was infiltrated and the SEA tweeted Syria-related tweets with photos and pro-Syria hashtags.

The account appears to have returned to normal this morning, with no mention of the hack. But the SEA took responsibility on its website.

"The Syrian Electronic Army hacked today the official account of Thomson Reuters and published some truth about what is really hapenning [sic] in Syria. The account was suspended after less than hour," the SEA wrote.

The Syrian Electronic Army emerged in September. The hackers reportedly started attacking Western websites in retaliation for Innocence of Muslims, an anti-Islamic video that resulted in violent demonstrations in the Middle East. They have since been targeting news sites they believe are reporting news hostile to the Syrian government, including the Financial Times, The Guardian, the BBC, and even The Onion.

This is not the first time Reuters has been targeted over its Syria coverage. A year ago, Reuters briefly shuttered its @ReutersTech Twitter feed after it was used to send fake tweets regarding Syrian rebels.

Shortly thereafter, the Reuters website was hacked and a false story was posted, which said Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal had died.

Last week, the SEA also went after messaging apps Tango and Viber, which the group claims are used to spy on its users. "The SEA downloaded some of the app databases And after we gain access to some systems of that app, it was clear for us that the purpose of this app is spying and tracking of its users," the SEA said about Viber.

Last month, Saudi Arabia blocked Viber because, according to regulators, it is difficult to monitor and takes revenue away from large telecom firms.

Warren Buffett auctions off personal tour of California See?s Candy factory

OMAHA, Neb. ? Billionaire Warren Buffett is auctioning off an all-you-eat tour of the See?s Candy factory in California to benefit an education nonprofit there.

Bidding had already reached $30,000 by Monday, but it remains to be seen whether the final price of this auction will rival the annual auction of lunch with Buffett which routinely tops $1 million.

The online auction that runs through Aug. 13 will benefit Communities In Schools of Los Angeles. It is being offered on the charitybuzz.com website.

Buffett says he?ll teach the auction winner the proper way to eat a bonbon during the half-day tour. Buffett?s Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate has owned See?s Candy since 1972, and he spends hours munching on See?s treats while answering questions at Berkshire?s annual meetings.

Buffett did not immediately respond to questions about this new auction Monday.

For more than a decade, the only time Buffett auctioned off a chance to meet with him was the lunch auction that helps fund the Glide Foundation?s efforts to help the poor and homeless in San Francisco.

The winner of this year?s lunch auction paid $1,000,100. That?s a bargain compared to the previous five years when the winning bids all topped $2 million, including the record 2012 bid of $3,456,789.

This new See?s Candy auction could affect bidding on the lunch auction. But then again, the winners of the lunch auction are guaranteed more time to talk with Buffett, which could help keep that event more valuable.

The lunch auction winners get to spend several hours asking Buffett questions about business, philanthropy and life.

The fine print on the candy auction site promises only a meeting with Buffett where the winner can take a picture with the renowned investor and get something autographed, so the candy tour may not offer nearly as much opportunity to learn from Buffett.

story continues below

Investors all over the world watch what Buffett does and try to copy his moves because of his remarkable track record of success. Through the end of 2012, Buffett?s Berkshire has delivered a compounded annual gain of 19.7 percent to investors ? more than double the S&P 500?s growth rate.

And Buffett, 82, has been gradually giving away his fortune since 2006. He plans to eventually divide most of his shares of Berkshire stock between five charitable foundations, with the largest block going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Buffett?s Berkshire owns roughly 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms. Its insurance, utility and railroad businesses typically account for more than half of the company?s net income. It also has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

World?s first test-tube burger to be served in London this week

Could a burger made from artificial meat be the next generation of prime beef patties?

The world?s first 5-ounce test-tube burger, made of meat grown in a laboratory, will be served up in London this week, according to a report by The Independent.

RELATED: FOOD & WINE REVEALS 'BEST BURGERS IN AMERICA'

The burger costs more than $380,000 to make, composed of 3,000 tiny strips of meat grown from the stem cells of one cow.

?Right now, we are using 70% of all our agricultural capacity to grow meat through livestock,? professor Mark Post of Maastricht University in Holland told ?The Independent.? ?You are going to need alternatives. If we don?t do anything, meat will become a luxury food and will become very expensive.?

RELATED: FOUR NEW BURGER JOINTS MUSCLE THEIR WAY INTO NYC

Developers hope to meet the increasing global demand for protein and minimize the need for herds of cattle with a four-step process used to turn stems cells from animal flesh into burgers.

First, the stem cells are stripped from the cow?s muscle and then incubated until they multiply to create a sticky tissue. The muscle cells are then grown under tension and stretched. Finally, the lab-grown meat and animal fat are minced and turned into burgers.

RELATED: SEE AMERICA'S BEST BURGERS FROM CHAIN RESTAURANTS

The process could take up to six weeks to get from stem cell to supermarket shelves, but before it can be commercialized, the Food Standards Agency must provide information showing the process is safe for public consumption and has a nutritional value equivalent to regular meat.

For now, the battle may just be turning the public onto the idea of eating the artificial patty.

Ruling party favored as Cambodians go to polls

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? Cambodians went to the polls Sunday in an election almost certain to deliver another mandate for veteran Prime Minister Hun Sen amid cries of foul play by his opponents.

Hun Sen was among the early voters Sunday, casting his ballot near his home in Takhmau in Kandal province, south of the capital Phnom Penh. He was all smiles as he walked from his car to the polling station, but declined to speak to reporters after casting his ballot, presumably to conform to rules barring any sort of campaigning during the voting period.

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy visited a polling station near his party's office in Phnom Penh, where hundreds of voters, particularly younger ones, greeted him enthusiastically, taking photos and a few bolder ones even hugging him.

"I am happy to see people flocking to vote," Rainsy told reporters, though he himself cannot vote and is not on the ballot because he failed to register in time, being in self-imposed exile until earlier this month.

The exile was to avoid a jail term for convictions he said were politically motivated. He returned on July 19 only after receiving a royal pardon at the behest of Hun Sen, his longtime and bitter rival.

The pardon was an evident effort by Hun Sen to appease critics of the election process, including the United States, who suggested that Rainsy's exclusion from the electoral process was a major sign that the polls would not be free and fair.

Critics charge the process is heavily rigged anyway. Rainsy's Cambodia National Rescue Party and nonpartisan groups say that the ruling party uses the machinery of government and security forces in an unfair manner to reward or pressure voters.

They also say that voter registration procedures were badly flawed, possibly leaving more than 1 million people disenfranchised. The independent Committee for Free and Fair Elections said Saturday that the ink with which voters were supposed to stain their fingers to prevent them from voting twice was not indelible as claimed.

Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party and the government-appointed National Election Committee say the election process is fair.

Rainsy visited several polling stations and commented on cases where people were unable to cast their votes because their names were not listed in the rolls.

"They couldn't find their names. They (were) either deleted or removed or assigned to another polling station. So, it's very confusing!" he said.

He said his party would wait to see more evidence before deciding what to do next, but if it was clear the voters' will was being denied, "definitely, there will be protests."

Voters in the capital seemed proud to be able to cast their ballots. Sixty-eight-year-old Meas Rith, who was voting with his wife, said he had been waiting five years since the last polls and finally received satisfaction Sunday.

"I have voted today because I want to see Cambodia progress along with other countries in the world and I wanted to vote to select a real democratic leader for our country," he said. "I don't mind who wins the election, but I want this vote to be free and fair, and the winner to triumph honestly and the loser to lose with grace."

Rainsy, anticipating a second-place finish, told reporters Saturday that any gains his party makes would be significant, and would set the stage for a long fight for fair elections. He said he knew the election was unfair, but that his party was taking part "to show the Cambodian people that we are with them."

Hun Sen's party holds 90 of the 123 seats in the outgoing National Assembly. Although eight parties are running, the CNRP and CPP are the only serious contenders.

Opposition parties had held 29 seats in the assembly, but were kicked out of the body shortly before election campaigning began on the technical grounds that they had registered to run in the name of the new CNRP, formed by a merger of the two existing opposition parties under whose banners they had won their seats.

Despite the poor prospects for change, the campaign has generated great excitement, especially among young people in Phnom Penh, where large crowds of supporters of the two main parties staged spirited rallies.

Hun Sen has been in power for 28 years and says he has no intention of stepping down soon. His authoritarian rule has given him a stranglehold over the state bureaucracy that makes challenges to his authority difficult to mount.

Hun Sen is running on a record of having restored peace and stability after decades of war and unrest, and promoting economic growth. The opposition decries corruption and injustice, especially reflected in widespread land-grabbing that see influential companies and businessmen develop property from which thousands of people have been evicted.

There are 9.7 million registered voters in a population of almost 15 million. Just over half the electorate is under 30 years old.

The election campaign has not been marked by the kind of violence, including killings, which plagued past polls.

First on CNN: Feinstein says San Diego Mayor Bob Filner should resign

(CNN) - San Diego?s Democratic mayor, who is embroiled in sexual harassment allegations, should resign, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Sunday.

Speaking on CNN?s ?State of the Union,? the California Democrat said Bob Filner no longer held the moral authority to lead his city.

?Being the mayor of a big city, you're a role model for people,? Feinstein told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley. ?You're either inspirational to people or you aren't. It's a very tough job. And I don't think that somebody who is lacking a moral compass really sets a role model or really will provide the kind of leadership that San Diegans want.?

On Friday, Filner announced he would take a two-week hiatus from his job while undergoing ?intensive counseling? in response to the sexual harassment allegations.

He said he would remain engaged with city business while in therapy, and that he would return to office on August 19.

"My focus will be on making sure I am doing right by this city by being the best mayor I can be and being the best person I must be,? he said.

Feinstein said the embattled mayor?s actions weren?t sufficient, suggesting a recall effort would be appropriate to remove him from office.

?This kind of absence of a moral compass is subject to recall. I suspect there will be recalls, and the people will judge,? she said.

Canada: One jihadi returns, another named in Bulgarian terror attack (video)

Our friendly neighbors to the north, via Aaron Yoon returns to Canada after being jailed for terrorism overseas ? The Globe and Mail.

web-yoon23nw1

Canadian police said they know that a terrorism suspect returned home Friday from a foreign jail, but won?t comment on reports they took him in for questioning upon arrival at the airport.

?We are aware that a Canadian jailed in Mauritania has returned to Canada,? RCMP Corporal David Falls said, before adding that the Mounties would make no further remarks on the matter.

He would not comment on reports that the Canadian in question, Aaron Yoon, 24, had been escorted off a flight from Europe by RCMP officers after it landed at Pearson International Airport.

Mr. Yoon, who is from London, Ont., was released after 18 months in prison in Mauritania this week. He had been held there on terrorism charges.

Canadian authorities have been trying to piece together his foreign travels with two Canadian friends who died taking part in a terrorist attack that killed at least 37 hostages in Algeria early this year.

A Canadian of Korean heritage who embraced radical Islam, Mr. Yoon travelled to Africa two years ago with two friends from London, Xris Katsiroubas and Ali Medlej. He denies being part of the deadly terrorist plot in which his friends played key roles.

After Mr. Yoon was arrested in Mauritania in 2011, Mr. Katsiroubas and Mr. Medlej joined a terrorist faction aligned with al-Qaeda known as the Signed in Blood Battalion. In the months that followed, the two men helped plan a siege at a gas-plant complex in Algeria.

Last week, U.S. authorities announced charges against the mastermind of that attack, Algerian terrorist Mokhtar Belmokhtar, who is at large and has been the subject of a sealed indictment since February. A U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman would not say on Tuesday whether any other suspects or material witnesses are being sought.

NBA News: Most Underrated Free-Agent Signings of 2013 Offseason

The 2013 NBA offseason is in full swing, as countless free agents have found new homes and numerous trades have been executed. While the acquisition of players such as Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Andre Iguodala are well-documented, certain signings have gone under the radar.

The question is, what have been the most underrated free agent signings of the 2013 offseason?

Certain players lack the superstar name value, thus being perceived as signings that will have a less significant impact on title contenders. With that being said, the addition of quality role players is what separates the star-studded rosters from the championship winners.

Fortunately, those players are about to receive their due.

?

Marco Belinelli, San Antonio Spurs

Position:?Shooting Guard

Age:?27

Experience:?6 Seasons

2012-13 Season Averages

10.43 PER, 25.8 MPG, 9.6 PPG, 2.0 APG, 1.9 RPG

?

The San Antonio Spurs were an offensive rebound away from winning the 2013 NBA championship. Gearing up for the 2013-14 season, the Spurs return virtually the same cast of players, with nothing but room to improve upon their weaknesses.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Spurs have signed Marco Belinelli two a two-year deal worth $6 million?a signing that could push them over the edge.

With Manu Ginobili's decline during the 2013 NBA playoffs, the Spurs were left without an off-guard that can create his own shot. Danny Green set an NBA record for three-point field goals made in one NBA Finals, but his ability to attack off of the bounce is limited, at best.

Belinelli proved with the Chicago Bulls that not only can he shoot the lights out, but he can create space for himself?during the playoffs.

Belinelli scored in double-figures during all five games that he saw at least 30 minutes of play, including a 24-point performance during Chicago's 99-93 Game 7 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. With Ginobili's ability to consistently produce up in the air, Belinelli could see significant minutes in San Antonio.

If he's anything like he was for the Bulls, Belinelli could be the player that helps San Antonio return to the Finals.

?

Jose Calderon, Dallas Mavericks

Position:?Point Guard

Age:?31

Experience:?8 Seasons

2012-13 Season Averages

18.80 PER, 29.6 MPG, 11.3 PPG, 7.1 APG, 2.4 RPG, 46.1% 3PT

?

The Dallas Mavericks have had a busy offseason, signing former point guard Devin Harris and Wayne Ellington. They've also been actively pursuing Chris Paul and Dwight Howard, albeit unsuccessfully.

According to Marc Stein and Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas, the Mavericks also signed point guard Jose Calderon?the most underrated acquisition of the summer.

In terms of pure offense, Calderon is an undeniably?elite?player, facilitating as well as any and shooting the three-ball at a top-tier clip. In fact, Calderon may just be the best combination of facilitating and spot-up three-point shooting in the NBA.

During the 2012-13 season, Calderon averaged 7.1 assists per game and shot a league-best 46.1 percent from three-point range.

Furthermore, Calderon ranked seventh amongst point guards in three-point field goals made. Paired with overall rankings of second in assist-to-turnover ratio and fifth in assists per 48 minutes, it's clear that Calderon is both responsible and proficient.

For a team that loves the three-ball and already has Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion on the roster, the addition of an elite offensive point guard could be more powerful than we're acknowledging. All in all, Dallas is now a legitimate postseason team.

?

Darren Collison, Los Angeles Clippers

Position:?Point Guard

Age:?25

Experience:?4 Seasons

2012-13 Season Averages

16.37 PER, 29.3 MPG, 12.0 PPG, 5.1 APG, 2.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG

?

The Los Angeles Clippers made one of the most high-profile trades of the year, essentially dealing Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler for J.J. Redick and Jared Dudley. In turn, L.A. added the sharpshooting it has so desperately needed, but created a void at backup point guard.

Per Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, the Clippers have signed point guard Darren Collison to a two-year deal worth $1.9 million per season to replace Bledsoe.

Collison had a solid year with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 12.0 points and 5.1 assists on a slash line of .471/.353/.880. The key here isn't what the 25-year-old did in Dallas, however, but instead what happened in 2010.

Chemistry is the key here.

That was the season that Collison played with Clippers point guard Chris Paul and broke onto the scene as a premier transition threat.

Since then, Collison has experienced success with both Dallas and the Indiana Pacers, averaging 8.9 points in 21.9 minutes during 16 postseason games. With that being said, Paul's leadership was critical to Collison's progression as a rookie.

With Bledsoe gone and Chauncey Billups having signed with the Detroit Pistons, the Clippers continued to value team chemistry by bringing in a dynamic playmaker that CP3 is familiar with. Placating your superstar?and?improving your roster is what you call a win.?
