How Are You Using Twitter for Your Business?
There isn't a lot of debate anymore about the importance of using social media for business.
Sure, there is some disagreement about how much weight these new marketing efforts should be given compared to traditional media, but most people will agree that social media is something better done than not. (Just be sure that if you do set up social media accounts that you actually use and maintain them! No one likes a ghost town.)
Many companies find Twitter?to be one of the more easily accessible social media tools as well as one of the most useful. The limitations of Twitter (just 140-characters to a tweet) actually help make it easy to use without being overwhelmed.
So how can you use it for your business?
- Updates - Just share quick news of note about your company
- Entertainment - Find something funny on the internet? Your customers and clients like to laugh too!
- Branding - Just having a Twitter handle and page gives your business one more place to be found on the internet (and Google will rank it highly)
- Thought Leadership - Did you write a new blog post? Share it with the world
- Conversations - Twitter isn't just a one way street, reply to those who reply to you or find other conversation threads via hashtags (#) and interject
The above tips cover ways you can use Twitter for everyday purposes, but when you're holding large events, Twitter can also serve as a way for all attendees to share their thoughts with each other as well as interact with presenters, pundits and even your CEO. And all without being in the same room.
Just look at the recent example from CompTIA?(a Tech Image client) during its Breakaway 2012 event (scroll down and look to the right for the Twitter feed). Using a hashtag, CompTIA was able to encourage attendees to engage in conversations and share interesting content not only with each other but with the world.
Lastly, consider the benefits Twitter can offer in terms of traffic to your website. Promotion through any media is a delicate task, but if done right, you can see an increase in visitors to your site. The same holds true for Twitter. If you push too heavily, you'll turn off your followers. But if you push too lightly, you won't see anything in return. Just follow the old 80/20 rule and try to make only 1 in 5 tweets promotional in nature. Let the other four offer some value to your followers in terms of thought leadership or other resources.
And remember, if you want your social media followers to visit your website or click on a link, don't beat around the bush. Studies show that people respond best when you just offer a clear call to action.
