Cultural exchange in DC between UH and New Mexico University ...

Despite a whether advisory and temperatures hovering between 102 and 105 degrees on Friday, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival went on as scheduled.

University of Hawai?i faculty member and author Maya Soetoro-Ng braved the heat to visit colleagues and UH exhibits on The National Mall where she said more than a million visitors will learn about the importance of the preservation of tradition and the power of harnessing indigenous culture.

?I also think it?s terrific that the university is having this opportunity to share and collaborate with other institutions and to have conversations of import and I think that the connections that are being forged here will probably be lasting,? Soetoro-Ng said.

University of Hawai?i delegates are having many opportunities to exchange cultural experiences with other public land-grant universities and colleges that are being featured in the festival.

UH students took part in a healing ritual at the University of New Mexico exhibit where traditional healers Tonita Gonzales and Rita Navarrete Perez led the group in asking for health, wisdom, illumination of heart, strength and spirit.

UH students and other participants held drums and bells and other instruments and rattled them during the ritual.

UH health and healing experts received healing treatments from New Mexico?s healers, who in turn received lomi lomi treatments from UH experts.

New Mexico?s healers presented, Keola Chan of UH M?noa John A. Burns School of Medicine?s Department of Native Hawaiian Health, with a ceremonial headband and sash that are said to protect the healer?s energy.

?To me, it was about reconnecting as a people, bonding once again those relationships that we traditionally had when our ancestors used to sail,? said Chan.

In turn, Chan offered Navarrete Perez traditional Hawaiian ?awa, which she accepted with gratitude.

?How important for us it is to share our sacred medicine from your beautiful country. And I feel the responsibility to share this experience to the people that come close to me in my life,? said Navarrete Perez, a traditional healer working with the University of New Mexico exhibit.

Experiences like this is what the festival is all about.

?Hopefully, the relationships, the two way flows will lead to other interesting projects of culture awareness and sharing and collaboration in the future,? Soetoro-Ng said.

Smithsonian Folklife Festival

The University of Hawai?i will be among 20 public land-grant universities to be featured in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. from June 27 to July 8, 2012.

The festival celebrates the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Morrill Act, which paved the way for higher education for rural and working class Americans.

The University of Hawai?i exhibits will feature traditional Hawaiian health and healing practices, a mini taro patch, non-instrument navigation, medicinal herb and organic farming and much more. Hawai?i Community College?s halau Unukupukupu and the University of Hawai?i at M?noa?s Tuahine Troup will also perform.

[AP] GOP plots 2013 strategy on health care repeal

WASHINGTON? Turned away at the Supreme Court, congressional Republicans sketched a strategy Friday to repeal the nation's health care law in 2013 that requires a sweeping election victory carrying Mitt Romney to the presidency and the party at least to narrow control of the Senate.

Romney sought to turn the court's decision upholding the two-year-old law into a campaign battle cry, saying the 5-4 ruling had injected "greater urgency" into his challenge to President Barack Obama. "I think many people assumed that the Supreme Court would do the work that was necessary in repealing Obamacare," he said, adding that the justices "did not get that job done."

Several Republicans seized on a portion of Chief Justice John Roberts' majority opinion that said the centerpiece of the law, a requirement to purchase insurance, was constitutional because it is based on Congress' power to impose a tax. "Those who will end up paying the heaviest burden for not buying government-mandated insurance won't be the wealthiest Americans, but the very middle class families the president claims to defend," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

The White House said that was an argument it was happy to have. Presidential press secretary Jay Carney said Obama has signed legislation cutting middle class taxes repeatedly, that Republicans want to extend existing income tax cuts for the wealthy and then add "another $5 trillion...that would disproportionately benefit" the same group.

At the same time, the administration announced the latest in a series to steps to implement a law that already has curbed insurance company abuses and cut costs for seniors with high prescription drug costs. Officials said another round of financing was available for states to set up health insurance exchanges, the one-stop markets for consumers scheduled to open in 2014.

Polls find Obama and Romney in a close race four months before the election, with the economy the nation's overriding issue. The battle for control of the Senate is also uncertain, and one day after the court's ruling, the principal fallout was political.

Romney, Obama and congressional candidates in both parties raised campaign money from the ruling, in which Roberts unexpectedly joined four more liberal justices to uphold the law's core component ? a requirement that nearly all Americans purchase health insurance beginning in 2014.

The Republican-controlled House is planning to vote in a little more than a week to repeal the law. But that is a symbolic vote, designed to show faith with opponents of what the GOP scornfully calls "Obamacare." Party officials also hope to force some Democrats into a difficult vote on legislation that has never been popular with the public. The repeal measure is doomed in the Senate, where Democrats hold a majority.

Recognizing as much, Republicans were turning their attention to 2013 as their next realistic opportunity to erase legislation that they say gives government control of health at the same time it raises taxes, cuts Medicare and swells deficits.

"One thing is clear: we need the majority in the Senate," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky wrote in a fundraising email to supporters. "Every path to repeal depends on it."

A 60-vote majority is normally required to overcome adamant opposition to legislation in the Senate, but under limited circumstances, a mere majority can suffice. Democrats took advantage of that when they pushed the health care law to passage in 2010 when they controlled 59 seats. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., told reporters, "I think with a ... majority in the Senate, Republicans could do the same things."

The GOP currently has 47 seats in the 100-member Senate, and needs to gain three for effective control if Romney wins the presidential election. Any repeal scenario also assumes the Republicans maintain their House majority in the fall.

A little more than 24 hours after the ruling, Obama, Romney and congressional leaders quickly adjusted.

One effect of the decision was to make Romney's election essential for tea party-aligned voters who fought his nomination in winter and spring but now need him in the White House if there is to be any real hope of repeal.

In a fundraising pitch, the Tea Party Patriots addressed both Romney and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio., asserting "the American people are putting you on notice. We will not rest until this law is overturned."

The court's decision also injected the health care issue into congressional races.

Crossroads GPS, an independent group aligned with Republicans, introduced an ad in North Dakota noting that Democratic senatorial candidate Heidi Heitkamp "endorsed Obamacare." The commercial says the law raises taxes, cuts Medicare and gives federal bureaucrats "the power to restrict seniors' care." It encourages viewers to lobby her to swing behind the repeal effort.

Heitkamp's opponent, Republican Rep. Rick Berg, favors repealing the legislation, although a spokesman said the lawmaker supports existing provisions that guarantee coverage for pre-existing conditions, reduce prescription drug expenses for seniors and raise federal payments in North Dakota and other rural states for doctors and other Medicare health care providers.

The spokesman, Chris Pack, said he didn't have any information how the provisions could be left in place between the time the current law was repealed and a new one was enacted.

It's a question Democrats raised repeatedly in recent days as they tried to position themselves politically for an anticipated defeat at the Supreme Court that didn't come.

Republican candidates ran on a slogan of "'repeal and replace" in 2010, when they won control of the House and gained seats in the Senate. But they have yet to outline details for replacement legislation, and even before the court's ruling, GOP officials said they had no plans to do so until after the election or perhaps 2013. Nor has Romney detailed what he would like to see included in a substitute law.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy effective in combatting anxiety disorders, study suggests

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Whether it is a phobia like a fear of flying, public speaking or spiders, or a diagnosis such as obsessive compulsive disorder, new research finds patients suffering from anxiety disorders showed the most improvement when treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in conjunction with a "transdiagnostic" approach -- a model that allows therapists to apply one set of principles across anxiety disorders.

The combination was more effective than CBT combined with other types of anxiety disorder treatments, like relaxation training according to Peter Norton, associate professor in clinical psychology and director of the Anxiety Disorder Clinic at the University of Houston (UH).

Norton concludes that therapists treating people with anxiety disorders may effectively use a treatment that applies one set of principals across all types of anxiety disorders. The findings are the result of a decade of research, four separate clinical trials and the completion of a five-year grant funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

Norton defines anxiety disorders as when anxiety and fear are so overwhelming that it can start to negatively impact a person's day-to-day life. He notes anxiety disorders include: panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, specific phobias and generalized anxiety disorder. Often anxiety disorders occur with a secondary illness, such as depression, substance or alcohol abuse. Norton says there are targeted treatments for each diagnosis, but there has been little recognition that the treatments don't differ much, and they only differ in very specific ways.

"The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been an important breakthrough in understanding mental health, but people are dissatisfied with its fine level of differentiation," said Norton. "Panic disorders are considered something different from social phobia, which is considered something different from PTSD. The hope was that by getting refined in the diagnosis we could target interventions for each of these diagnoses, but in reality that just hasn't played out."

As a graduate student in Nebraska, Norton couldn't get enough people together on the same night to run a group treatment for social phobia, and that marked the beginning 10 years of work on the transdiagnostic treatment approach.

"What I realized is that I could open a group to people with anxiety disorders in general and develop a treatment program regardless of the artificial distinctions between social phobia and panic disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, and focus on the core underlying things that are going wrong," said Norton.

Norton finds cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), a type of treatment with a specific time frame and goals, helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors to be the most effective treatment. The twist for him was using CBT in conjunction with the transdiagnostic approach. The patients receiving the transdiagnostic treatment showed considerable improvement, especially with treating comorbid diagnoses, a disease or condition that co-exists with a primary disease and can stand on its own as a specific disease, like depression.

"What I have learned from my past research is that if you treat your principal diagnosis, such as social phobia and you hate public speaking, you are going to show improvement on some of your secondary diagnosis. Your mood is going to get a little better, your fear of heights might dissipate. So there is some effect there, but what we find is when we approach things with a transdiagnostic approach, we see a much bigger impact on comorbid diagnoses," said Norton. "In my research study, over two-thirds of comorbid diagnoses went away, versus what we typically find when I'm treating a specific diagnosis such as a panic disorder, where only about 40 percent of people will show that sort of remission in their secondary diagnosis. The transdiagnostic treatment approach is more efficient in treating the whole person rather than just treating the diagnosis, then treating the next diagnoses."

Norton notes the larger contributions of the studies are to guide further development and interventions for how clinical psychologists, therapists and social workers treat people with anxiety disorders. The data collected will be useful for people out on the front lines to effectively and efficiently treat people to reduce anxiety disorders.

Norton is the author of the book, "Group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Anxiety. A Transdiagnostic Treatment Manual," and co-author of "The Anti-Anxiety Workbook: Proven Strategies to Overcome Worry, Phobias, Panic and Obsessions." He has authored more than 90 research papers on such topics as anxiety disorders, CBT and chronic pain, and he serves on the editorial boards of two scientific journals.

The US is the only major country that taxes the worldwide income of its citizens. Most countries determine tax liability based upon residency. In addition, a portion of foreign earned income is typically excludable from US tax. When that arises, a taxpayer owes US tax on income earned in another country and already taxed there. A surprising number of people are learning that they are US citizens. For example, many people who were born in Canada and lived there for their entire lives have a parent who is a US citizen. That is sufficient to provide US citizenship for these Canadians. They are faced with failure to file tax returns for several years. In order to comply with the tax filing requirements, they will likely need accountants with training from CPA preparation to interpret income records, compute the foreign tax credit, and determine US tax liability. The US implemented the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act in 2010. This law requires foreign financial institutions to report information to the IRS about accounts of US citizens starting in 2013. Although some banks are resisting, those that refuse to comply face a 30 percent withholding tax on all payments from the US. That stringent act of retribution has led some European banks to simply drop their US customers rather than comply with the IRS reporting demand. This creates a substantial burden on US citizens who are working and living abroad. Tax accountants already follow the rule emphasized in CPA exam review to reveal foreign financial accounts on anyone’s US tax return. A special form is submitted to the IRS when the aggregate of account values exceeds $10,000. Failure to submit the form results in a possible $10,000 penalty. Disclosure is required of bank accounts as well as brokerage accounts, mutual fund holdings, and even pension funds in foreign countries. The aim of the IRS is clearly to locate accounts where US citizens are hiding their foreign earned income. An extreme response from some individuals has been renouncing their US citizenship. Over 1,800 people renounced their US citizenship in 2011. This is more than the combined number from 2007 through 2009. The popular press has denounced all these individuals for avoiding tax obligations to their country. However, information from CPA review courses about who owes US tax conveys a different story. Millions of individuals living abroad face harsh consequences from being born to US citizen parents or being unable to open a bank account

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A doctor accused of prescribing pain killers to three young men who died was ordered Tuesday to stand trial for second-degree murder in the overdose deaths.

Dr. Hsui-Ying "Lisa" Tseng is one of only a handful of doctors nationwide to be charged with murder related to prescription drugs.

The decision by Superior Court Judge M.L. Villar de Longoria to send Tseng to trial came after a three-week preliminary hearing where she was portrayed as the go-to doctor for people seeking drugs.

Young men told of coming to Tseng after using up prescriptions from other physicians. A few testified under grants of immunity.

There was testimony about a total of 12 of Tseng's patients who died of drug overdoses. Only three deaths were charged by prosecutors as solely caused by her prescriptions.

Some patients acknowledged using illegal drugs such as heroin that they did not get from Tseng. She was charged with prescribing Xanax, oxycodone, methadone, Soma, and other drugs.

Authorities allege that Tseng, who operated a storefront medical clinic with her husband in suburban Rowland Heights, wrote more than 27,000 prescriptions over a three-year period. The judge called the amounts "astounding."

Tseng has pleaded not guilty to 24 felony counts and could face 45 years to life in prison if convicted on all charges.

The judge denied a defense request to have Tseng's bail lowered from $3 million to $1 million.

The judge said the results of Tseng's prescription writing should have been reasonably foreseeable to her when her patients started dying in alarming numbers.

"She continued to prescribe these narcotics in high doses even after she was told something was terribly wrong and young men were overdosing and dying," said Villar de Longoria.

The judge cited testimony about one young man who received an opiate prescription, went into the restroom at Tseng's office and overdosed, requiring paramedics to be called.

The judge said Tseng, who took an oath to do no harm, "used her prescription pad to inflict irreparable harm."

Mothers of some of the young men who died sat weeping quietly as the judge gave her ruling.

Outside court, defense attorney Allan Stokke, who argued the murder charge was unsupported by law, said more legal motions will be filed.

"She's ready to continue the battle," he said.

Deputy District Attorney John Niedermann told the judge at the start of the hearing that Tseng knew that three other patients had died after receiving drugs from her in 2007 and 2008.

"It put her on notice that the prescriptions she was providing were leading to deaths," he said.

No charges were filed in those earlier drug overdoses, but the prosecution sought to use them and other deaths as evidence against Tseng.

The preliminary hearing was more extensive than most, with more than 40 witnesses testifying. They included members of law enforcement, the coroner's office, former staff members at Tseng's clinic, expert witnesses, former patients and family members of patients. The prosecution presented 140 pieces of evidence.

Tseng was represented by five attorneys, an indication of the seriousness of the case.

Four of the attorneys presented final arguments, blaming the dead patients for making a willful choice not to follow Tseng's instructions on how to take the drugs.

Some patients added alcohol to the mix, they said, arguing Tseng did not have "a crystal ball" that would tell her they were abusing the drugs. They said she treated her patients in good faith and wanted to relieve their pain.

However, Tseng's receptionist Gloria Rodriguez took the witness stand and described an office crammed with 20 people at a time and 15 waiting in the hallway. When some patients complained about the wait, Rodriguez said Tseng told her, "'They're druggies. They can wait.'"

Tseng, wearing an orange jail uniform and shackles, kept her head down and took notes. She has been in custody since her arrest in March.

In court for every day of the preliminary hearing was April Rovero, whose son Joey died after receiving prescriptions from Tseng. The 21-yearold University of Arizona student drove to California with friends to get the prescriptions in 2009.

The deaths of Vu Nguyen and Steven Ogle also were charged in the case.

April Rovero founded the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse.

In recent days a delegation of mothers appeared in court wearing protest T-shirts and buttons with pictures of the dead young men.

The judge set Tseng's next court appearance for July 10.

Putin visits West Bank, tours key Christian shrine

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) ? Visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his Palestinian counterpart Tuesday for what he said was a "responsible" position in negotiations with Israel, frozen for nearly four years, and said Russia has no problem recognizing a Palestinian state.

Putin also offered veiled criticism of Israel, saying unilateral actions ? an apparent reference to Israeli settlement construction on war-won land ? is not constructive.

The Russian president spoke at the end of a visit to the biblical West Bank town of Bethlehem, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas by his side. Putin inaugurated a Russian cultural and language center in Bethlehem and toured the church built over the traditional birth grotto of Jesus.

Israeli-Palestinian talks on the terms of Palestinian statehood broke off in 2008. Repeated efforts to restart them have failed because of wide gaps between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas.

Netanyahu says he is ready to resume talks but rejects preconditions. Abbas says there's no point negotiating as long as Israel keeps building for Jews in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, occupied territories the Palestinians want for a state, along with the Gaza Strip. Israel has moved half a million settlers to the West Bank and east Jerusalem since the 1967 war. It withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

"We talked about ways of overcoming the dilemma of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process," Putin said Tuesday. "I point out here the responsible position of President Abbas and his endeavor to reach a peaceful settlement based on a two-state settlement."

"I am sure that all unilateral actions are not constructive," he added.

Russia is an important Mideast player, in part because it is a member of the "Quartet" of mediators that includes the United States, the European Union and the United Nations. Of the four, Russia is seen as the most sympathetic to the Palestinians but has little sway over the group, because the United States has traditionally claimed the dominant role in mediating between the two sides.

With negotiations frozen, Abbas has sought to increase Palestinian leverage by seeking U.N. recognition of a state of Palestine. Palestinian diplomats have also toured the world in search of recognition of Palestine by individual countries.

Dozens of countries, including the former Soviet Union, did so after a 1988 statehood declaration by the Palestine Liberation Organization. Putin said Tuesday that Russia sticks by that decision. The United States and Israel have urged Abbas to halt all attempts to seek recognition of a Palestinian state and wait for a deal with Israel.

Abbas reiterated Tuesday that negotiations with Israel remain his key goal.

Later Tuesday, Putin traveled to Jordan for talks with King Abdullah II. Officials said they talked about the bloodshed in Syria, stalled Mideast peace efforts, Iran's nuclear program, Russian assistance to Jordan to build a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes and modernizing an oil terminal in the Gulf of Aqaba.

With close ties to Iran and a vote on the U.N. Security Council, Russia is seen as an important player that could influence Tehran, though it has in the past watered down international pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Russia is also one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's closest allies. Assad has drawn international condemnation for his bloody crackdown on the country's armed uprising.

In the meeting, Abdullah called for a "political solution to the crisis in Syria that would protect the unity and stability of the country and end the violence and bloodshed," a Royal Palace statement said. He said that a solution must have an "Arab and international consensus."

Putin and the king met in a conference hall on the shores of the Dead Sea. Later, Putin inaugurated a Russian guesthouse in the baptismal site in the nearby Jordan River, where tradition says Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

Jordan's banned Tahrir, or Liberation Party, condemned Putin as an "enemy who is not welcome in Jordan."

It called Putin "an arch enemy of Islam and Muslims," citing his close ties with Assad. "His visit to Jordan is an arrogant challenge to the feeling of Muslims and a disdain of innocent blood shed in Syria."

On Monday, Putin met Netanyahu, who urged Russia to step up pressure on Iran to curb its suspect nuclear program.

At a state dinner Monday, Israeli President Shimon Peres pressed Putin further, asking that he "raise his voice" against a nuclear Iran. Putin responded by saying that Russia has a "national interest" to secure peace and quiet in Israel but did not elaborate further.

Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé got chummy while watching their men perform at a Kanye West/ Jay-Z gig in Birmingham, England, on Friday.

The women were photographed giggling with one another among the Watch the Throne tour concertgoers. Usmagazine.com reports that the ladies, dressed rather casually, had a full-on ladies' night. "Kim and Beyoncé were dancing all night!" a source said. "They even went into the mosh pit! It was the most hectic thing ever!"

In another photo taken Friday night, Kim looked like she was singing along while Queen B rested her head on the reality star's shoulder. It's the first time Jay and Yeezy's lady loves have been photographed together. There had been previous reports that B was shunning K even though Kim had been scrambling to make a connection to the pop star. A source adds that it was just a rumor. "Kim and Beyoncé have always been cool," the insider said. "Beyoncé and Jay love Kim and think she's a good match for Kanye."

On Sunday night, the second half of Oprah Winfrey's interview with the Kardashian family aired. In this installment Kim opened up about being friends with the rapper for years before they took a chance on love.

"We met maybe almost a decade ago. I've known him for a really long time — we've been friends for like six or seven years — so it's very comforting to have someone that knows everything about you that respects you, understands, has gone through similar things," the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star said. "I can really relate to his mother passing, he can really relate to my father passing. I mean, there's so many similarities in our life that I feel like I'm at a really happy, good space.

"I don't know why it took so long for us to kind of get together," she added. "But I think I needed to go through all my experiences and some that he's gone through."

While parts of the International Space Station have been in space for years, one thing it is never short on is cameras. Scientific instruments and imaging satellites are all well and good, but there's no replacement for the eye of a skilled photographer aiming several thousands of dollars worth of DSLR equipment?at the Earth. Don Pettit is a frequent orbiter, and has produced some amazing images and time-lapse images. Here you can see a a picture of just how many cameras they keep on hand to capture those photographs.

All the cameras are Nikons, you'll notice; it may be that he's just a Nikon guy, but NASA chose to buy and modify Nikon bodies years ago, so chances are at least some of the ones Pettit is using are from the 2009 fleet of D3s DSLRs they sent up ??certainly at least one, by his right shoulder, and you can spot new D2Xs in this follow-up picture. While they do bring up new ones, they are unlikely to bring them back down; some are even allowed to burn up during reentry.

Wondering why they might need so many? With a big crew working on many different projects, it's probably good to have spares. But as Pettit himself shows in this photo, some setups require more than one camera or location ? for capturing panoramas, for instance.

And anyway, leaving them in place might be preferable; who wants to drag around a camera with a two-foot lens through narrow corridors in zero gravity?

CDC: Swine Flu Far Deadlier Than Estimated

The swine flu virus, H1N1, may have killed 15 times the number of people counted by the World Health Organization, according to a new study. And unlike the seasonal flu, the H1N1 pandemic struck down mostly young people, many living in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Beginning in 2009, the virus swept the globe, and the WHO counted 18,500 swine flu deaths that had been confirmed by laboratory tests. But according to new estimates from researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus probably killed between 105,700 and 400,000 people around the world in its first year alone, and an additional 46,000 to 179,000 people likely died of cardiovascular complications from the virus.

That's a pretty wide gap in death rates, but it's not unusual. The numbers of flu deaths confirmed by lab tests usually understate how many people actually died from the virus, simply because most doctors around the world don't have the time or the resources to test their patients for the virus and report cases to health authorities.

"This is a problem year in and year out, from London to Nairobi," said Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. "It's so difficult to test everyone with influenza."

The problem is greater in countries with few medical resources.

"In some countries, data on influenza are quite sparse or nonexistent," said Dr. Fatimah Dawood, the study's lead author. And she said even if a patient is tested, sometimes the virus might not even be detectable.

The study, published today in the medical journal The Lancet, is the first attempt to provide a global estimate of how many deaths actually occurred during the first year of the swine flu pandemic.

Researchers were more surprised by who the virus targeted. According to the CDC analysis, 80 percent of deaths from the swine flu pandemic were of people under age 65, not the older, frail adults who are typically the victims of seasonal flu. Geographically, 59 percent of the deaths were in Africa and Southeast Asia.

"The number of potential years of life that were lost was far higher than what we would anticipate during a seasonal flu epidemic," Dawood said.

Though the virus was deadly, the swine flu pandemic is still considered to have been a fairly mild one. The CDC calculates that up to 575,000 people may have died from H1N1 in 2009. The WHO estimates that the seasonal flu kills up to 500,000 people each year. Both pale in comparison to the flu pandemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.

"It just drives home how serious the disease can be -- that even the mildest pandemic we have an historic record of may have killed more than half a million people," said John Barry, author of "The Great Influenza."

Taking the flu seriously also involves taking annual vaccinations seriously. The CDC recommends that everyone over age 6 months get a flu shot each year.

"This should remind us in the fall that this is the time to get vaccinated," Schaffner said. "It's the best preventive measure we have available."
