Middlesex County Event Raises $21,000 For Pancreatic Cancer Research

MIDDLESEX COUNTY ? Nearly 250 people participated in Middlesex County?s Fourth Annual Pancreatic Cancer Walk, which raised over $21,000 to go toward research to combat the disease.

The funds are being put toward a pancreatic cancer clinical trial that tested the effectiveness of new vaccine combinations and immune response.

?This year Middlesex County raised a record-breaking amount, over $21,000 to benefit pancreatic cancer research at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey,? said Freeholder Deputy Director Ronald G. Rios, who spearheaded the event held at Roosevelt Park in Edison on June 9. ?At one point I looked around and saw a solid line of walkers surrounding the entire lake. I can?t thank the participants enough for taking their time to help us help others.?

Freeholder H. James Polos, chairperson of the county?s Public Safety and Health Committee, said: ?This event provides an opportunity to continue to increase awareness, raise funds, and educate individuals about pancreatic cancer.?

?This walk brings greatly needed awareness to this terribly deadly disease, and I am so glad to have been a part of this year?s event,? said U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. ?I unfortunately know personally the effects of Pancreatic Cancer, having lost my own mother to the disease in 2008. We need to continue to fight for research toward improved treatment and ultimately a cure.?

?This community event will continue to help CINJ?s physician-scientists in their efforts to develop cutting-edge treatments for pancreatic cancer,? said Leanne Kochy, director of major gifts for the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation. ?More than 1,100 New Jersey residents are expected to die of pancreatic cancer before the year is over. Middlesex County?s dedication to this cause will help improve the lives of so many, and we are truly grateful.?

Lester Jones, Middlesex County Office of Health Services director-health officer, said, ?We were very lucky to have the Cancer Institute of New Jersey as a partner again this year. I would also like to acknowledge the Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences, the Middlesex County Cancer Coalition, the Middlesex County Parks and Recreation Department, and Param Health Care Services Inc. for their the continued support for this cause. It is with their help that we were able to not only meet, but well exceed our goals for this year?s event?
